I cannot be objective when it comes to Polanski's work

People can stop watching movies, but they cannot lose their conscience. I say this because I want to talk about Polanski.

His life is truly extraordinary. Just in case you haven't remembered who he is, check out some of his filmography first.

"The Pianist" (2002)

"The Ghost Writer" (2010)

"Bitter Moon" (1992)

He struggles with suffering and is a film genius, but all of this is ultimately destroyed by his inner demons.

1. A Jewish boy who experienced World War II

I once read some of Polanski's confessions in a report.

He was born in a Polish Jewish family and was adopted by good people during World War II when his father cut through the German barbed wire fence and sent him out of the ghetto. His mother, however, died in the gas chambers of Auschwitz.

This encounter made him extraordinarily sensitive to World War II films throughout his life. He refused to do "Schindler's List" because he thought the script was not realistic enough and far from the brutal truth. A few years after the release of "Schindler's List", he makes a film that more closely matches his childhood memories, "The Pianist".

2. He shocks the film world and also the cult

I think Polanski's early works are fascinating.

In 1962, he made "Knife in the Water", which attracts the attention of Hollywood.

In 1968, at the age of 35, he films "Rosemary's Baby". At that time, horror films could not be incited into the hall of fame due to its crude, gory, and violence. But he boldly integrates religion and psychology, making the audience realize that horror films can also have extremely high artistic value.

However, probably because the religious content of the film was too exciting, that the infamous cult "Manson Family" also began to stir up.

They came to Polanski's villa and slaughter four innocent people in the house. Horrifyingly, his pregnant wife, Tate, got stabbed 16 times and her 8-month-old fetus died along with her.

An evil Manson family cult criminal was arrested

I just can't imagine how he survives through the death of his wife and children. If I were him, I would probably go crazy because these murderers originally wanted to slaughter Hollywood composer Terry Melcher.

They arrive at Melcher's villa, not knowing that just a few days earlier, Melcher had sold the villa to Polanski.

3. He is irrefutably a beast, no doubt about that

I love an ancient Roman proverb: people are between gods and beasts, sometimes inclined to one and sometimes to the other. Some become increasingly sacred, some become beasts, and most remain in the middle.

In the aftermath of the bloodbath, Polanski remains active in the film industry, making "Chinatown", which subverts noir films. At his pinnacle, he was probably even the best director in the world at the time.

But I think his worldview must have collapsed. I saw an interview with him in which he questioned, "How can anyone say that they kill for the sake of killing?"

In 1977, while working on a photo shoot for an American magazine, he raped Samantha, a 13-year-old girl, and was sentenced to decades in prison for doing so. But he escaped to Paris while awaiting trial and was interviewed by British writer Martin Amis.

Polanski said revealingly, "The judge wants to sleep with little girls. The juror wants to with little girls. Everyone wants to sleep with little girls!" This statement is shocking. Beneath this man's aura of genius, is an extremely arrogant, dirty and rotten soul.

What disappoints me most is that he refuses to confess. With his power in the film industry, he escaped to France and continued to live a free life as a beast.

From 1977 to the present, a steady stream of women has bravely come forward to expose the atrocities committed against them by Polanski all at the age of 15 or 16. For these, he did not deny, let alone show the slightest remorse. In his autobiography, he claims to have honored the memory of his late second wife, Tate, by having relations with girls between the ages of 16 and 19.

It's so disgusting. I'm going to throw up. Even if he is a genius, so what? One can stop watching movies, but one cannot lose one's conscience.

4. When law fails to sanction him, the Oscars can

After escaping to France, he continues to shoot and receive numerous awards for his work, which I won't go into here.

Like many audiences, I first heard of Polanski with "The Pianist". At that time, I had no concept of humanity. Now it is different. If I pretend to "objectively evaluate" a film, I would not want to. However, there are still many people around me, who indulge in his film world and are fascinated by him. And, they were willing to excuse his crimes.

After the #MeToo movement, in 2018, AMPAS (The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences), the institution that hosts the Oscars, announced the expulsion of Polanski.

He most recently swept the headlines because of his work "The Dreyfus Affair" three years ago. The French César Award was so generous as to give him the Best Director award.

However, there were many people standing outside the award ceremony in protest. The female filmmakers in the room were even more furious, with actress Adèle Haenel leaving the stage in anger.

Although the sanctions came very late and had little impact on his artistic career, he lived and got what was coming, and the audience and I also received what we have been waiting for.
