Netflix made a horror movie with an AI

Spoilers

When will artificial intelligence replace humans? I don’t know, but a bot can already write horror movies.

Netflix had released Mr. Puzzles Wants You to Be Less Alive, a horror movie written entirely by bots, in October 2021.

This mini horror movie has sparked a lively discussion and spread throughout the Internet. To date, the film has over 4 million views on YouTube.

|What is this horror film about?

There are two main characters.

The protagonist Mr. Puzzles, ostensibly a puppet with a scary mask and a three-wheeled unicycle, is actually a soulless machine. He likes to punish his victims for wrong answers. Jennifer was the victim. She worked in a big factory, looks pretty, but had little sympathy.

The film, which is only 4 minutes and 23 seconds long, focuses on Mr. Puzzles kidnapping Jennifer. Jennifer still failed in the final puzzle after being saved by two police officers. Then died.

| Is this horror movie scary?

Watching the whole movie, I do not feel very scary. The whole movie, except for the demonic Mr. Puzzles and the bloody and violent scenes, can be said to have nothing to do with horror films.

Unexpectedly, what impresses me most is the jokes in the film.

The movie talks about Mr. Puzzles, describing his mask as "Made in hell or Texas". The Texans said it was too funny.

The detective who comes to Jennifer's rescue is a drunk who falls on camera and is described in the film as "Mostly Whiskey".

When Mr. Puzzles punished Jennifer, who kept answering the question incorrectly, he said "Hope you have coupon for coffin".

What is most talked about is that, after the detective saved Jennifer, he expressed sadness over the death of her colleague. Jennifer surprisingly responded, "It's okay, it is a large company."

There are many more humorous dialogues like this in the movie. I have to say this mini-movie is more like a home-made video by a cool horror movie fan. And most viewers didn't hold the bot to the standards of a real movie. Its ability to create laugh-out-loud dialogue is already an advancement in artificial intelligence.

|How was this horror film created?

The bot was forced to watch 400,000 hours of horror movies to create the film.

As it turns out, the bot, which has been forced to do so, is crazy about paying homage to classic American horror movies in this film. It almost turns this new creation into a collection of horror movies.

We can find references to "Jennifer's Body", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "I Know What You Did Last Summer", as well as scenes from "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Friday the 13th" in the film.

For viewers familiar with these films, these elements will add interest. Without this background knowledge, however, much of the plot and dialogue in the film would be a bit baffling.

From the overall quality of this mini-horror movie, it can only stay in the degree of entertainment. Writers won't have to worry about losing their jobs to AI for a while.

| What will be the future of artificial intelligence movies?

In fact, the combination of film creation and AI is a direction that has been experimented in the film industry. For the time being, there are still a number of challenges.

1. Language

As you can see from this film, it still needs much improvement in the contextual connections and language fluency. Human natural language is complex and variable. It is challenging for AI which is good at finding patterns.

2. Social and cultural background

For example, after experiencing the new COVID-19 pandemic, we will be able to empathize with films on such topics. However, the bots are difficult to understand and cannot create any work about it.

3. Creativity

Creativity is a unique attribute that human beings possess. Our quest for art is to transcend existing works and forms. AI with current technology does not yet have this capability. For example, the mini-horror movie of Netflix is just made by bots stacking horror elements in one script. It is not a brand-new movie.

Will bots of the future be able to conquer the art? It is not known yet. But based on the available works, it seems that the film creators do not have to worry about their jobs for the time being.
