The split between the front and rear styles of this film makes people seriously doubt whether the screenwriter has changed. As good as the first half is, the second half sucks.
The first half changed the style of children's drama in the first movie and took the style of realism and horror. It gave me the feeling of facing a harsh reality.
Instead of avoiding their problems with gags, each child is forced to face the problem head-on. They did not shrink back. For example, you can see Freddy facing school violence (I have to say it’s good to write that having a meal with the hero does not help with the bullying.), Mary Wanting to do something for the family, Billy trying to unite the family, and so on.
The villain is extremely vicious because they kill people mercilessly, but their motivation cannot be regarded as completely unreasonable.
They all are good, because serious problems are very suitable to set off the growth of children, and some childish jokes help the narrative. Keeping childish does not mean escaping from reality heartlessly. When I watched it, I felt it could surpass the first movie.
After entering the final battle, something is wrong.
Because the style of the whole film suddenly turned 180 degrees and became a children's film that's even worse than the first one. The growth of each character in the first half was a waste, and the logic of the entire script began to drop.
Everyone loses their superpowers, the enemy is powerful, and a group of man-eating monsters is released to destroy the city. Shazam alone can't beat those three, and he can't save the citizens at the time. The situation is critical to the limit.
And then?
They neither discussed countermeasures nor asked for help, but said something encouraging on the roof of the building when the citizens were struggling to survive!
What's even more outrageous is that Billy said to his family members who lost their superpowers and couldn't beat street gangsters:
"You guys have to help me lure those monsters away."
what the...!?
What a filial son!
Then, without any plan, his parents drove the car into the murderous monster.
Yes! They stopped to discuss countermeasures among a group of murderous monsters who have a joke!
And then he gets out of the car and hikes to find the unicorn! His parents don't even stop them!
The following plot is even more outrageous. A pack of Skittles tamed the unicorn, the king of beasts. (I will pay double for Oreo) Freddy and his little girlfriend ran to the dragon and yelled but it didn't work at all. It took so long for the old lady to die that Billy can go back to say goodbye to his family and then come back to fight the boss. After an embarrassing slow-motion fight, the villain died. Wonder Woman casually came to deliver a battery, and Billy came back to life. The citizens who were scared suddenly became friendly neighbors to cheer up Billy, etc...
I want to complain. The big and small Billy’s personality is not in line, which is the hidden danger in the first film and completely breaks out in the second film. Big Billy always did stupid things as if something was wrong with him. I did not see any character growth.
All in all, only the first half is worth 7 points. Counting the second half, I think 5.5 is the limit to reach.
