In the realm of toy-based films, unlike the high-end and action-packed approach taken by Hasbro, LEGO has paved its own path with simplicity, style, and international appeal.
Unlike other toys, LEGO cannot be further defined because LEGO is LEGO. Although our generation usually refers to it as "LEGO bricks" (previously known as "plastic bricks"), its main joy lies in assembly or building. Therefore, LEGO minifigures are merely accessories, with the same body shape for all characters, allowing for great artistic expression. This distinct and unrelated form has given LEGO a significant advantage – these minifigures can be customized to resemble anyone, including well-known celebrities or characters. LEGO can transform into anyone: partnering with Marvel turns them into Avengers, with DC they become the Justice League, and with George Lucas, they become Jedi warriors. Therefore, when the LEGO Movie emerged, we weren't surprised to see anyone appear on the big screen.
Unlike Transformers or G.I. Joe, LEGO toys do not have their own worldview. The beginning of the movie makes viewers think it's another simulated real world, but this time, everyone and everything in this world is made of LEGO. It's a LEGO world, just like a monster world full of monsters, an underwater world full of fish, or a racing world full of cars. It's a parallel universe to the human real world. However, from the beginning, the movie reminds us that this LEGO toy world and the human world are not completely disconnected. The sound effects produced when vehicles move in the film, although computer-generated effects could be used for more realistic sounds, are often imitated by voice actors. This similarity to our playtime habits with toys is a reminder of the connection between the LEGO world and the real world.
Therefore, the world-building in this film is somewhat similar to "Wreck-It Ralph" from two years ago: the LEGO characters (game characters) exist as creations of humans, and the LEGO world (game world) is dependent on the real world. Moreover, compared to "Wreck-It Ralph," the influence of humans living outside the LEGO world is greater in this film, and the connection between the two worlds is tighter. When we were young, we often played with various toys, making them interact and providing our own voice-overs, performing with toys. The young boy in this film must have played like that too, so the movie has a "play within a play" aspect to it.
However, LEGO characters cannot simply be understood as the embodiment of little boys. While their actions are certainly influenced by the boys, when they are in the LEGO world, they still have their own autonomy. The confrontation between Emmett and his friends with the President, as well as the standoff between the little boy and his father, are related but not identical. The two worlds still belong to different dimensions, but there is a kind of "resonance" between them, which aligns the development and progress of certain events.
In the first half of the film, before the human world intervenes, it seems to discuss the dialectical relationship between order and individuality. Then, when the human father-son characters appear, the audience will discover that the ideological conflict of the LEGO characters actually corresponds to the different attitudes of the father and son towards toys. Therefore, the resolution of the conflict ultimately lies in the father's understanding of his son, which can be said to return to the eternal theme of family and affection in Hollywood films. From this perspective, this film is somewhat comparable to the recent DreamWorks Animation film "The Genius Glasses Dog," as both films touch upon the elimination of estrangement between father and son, which is deeply moving. However, compared to the explicit presentation in "The Genius Glasses Dog," this film deliberately hides the father-son affection storyline in the first half to create a reversal effect. Nonetheless, whether there is estrangement or mutual understanding between the father and son in the film, regardless of the state they are in, they convey one message: everyone loves LEGO, no matter how old they are. Of course, the best time to play with any toy is always when you share it with family and friends... well, playing with family is not always that fun, such as the chilling ending with the little sister, where we only hear her voice.
This film can be said to have a strong lineup both in front of and behind the scenes. Regarding the voice acting, the only ones I knew about before watching were Morgan Freeman as the Wise Man and Will Ferrell as the main antagonist. After researching online, I discovered that many familiar TV and movie stars were also involved. Morgan Freeman's voice is highly recognizable, even if you didn't know beforehand, you could instantly tell it's him. Each character in the film is cute in their own way, making it difficult to choose the best. However, the Wise Man and Batman characters have the most contrasting behavior and mannerisms, making them the most impressive. Aside from them, the most difficult voice to identify, in my opinion, would be Liam Neeson as the police officer uncle, and it turns out he voiced both the good cop and bad cop. Other actors' characters mostly inherit the personalities of their previously portrayed classic roles, but the fact that Liam Neeson took on this unexpected role is truly surprising. If he had portrayed this character in live action, the audience would definitely be shouting, "Don't be serious!"
As for the so-called "front stage", it refers to the cameo in the film Well-known characters from all walks of life. In addition to starring Batman, other members of the Justice League also made appearances. The adulterous Superman and Green Lantern are actually paired by Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill. The voice actor of Wonder Woman is Agent Hill from S.H.I.E.L.D. of M. Of course, there is also a glimpse of The Flash that many people may not have noticed at all. The 0.5-second shot is really talking about soy sauce no more. Warner, who holds the copyrights of the "Harry Potter" and "The Hobbit" series, will inevitably make the appearance of the two most respected mages in the film industry, and they seem to be gay friends, and they are always surrounded by Morgan Freedom. Man called the wrong name (one of my friends Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings movie did not fall, and I still thought that Dumbledore and Gandalf were played by one person. It can be seen that the white beard on the character's face is very important for face blindness. How strong is the amplification effect of the disease). Although it doesn't seem to have much to do with Warner, Star Wars, which is an important partner of Lego, has also been pulled in to make fun of it.
At that time, when I saw the members of the Justice League in the trailer, I sighed in my heart: Warner is really forced by comic fans and has no choice. Marvel Avengers 2 It's about to come out, and he hasn't finished one part yet, so he can only think of such a curvy way to save the country, let the Justice League gather once with such a funny image. Batman in this film, as the second male lead, can be said to be trying his best to self-destruct his image. It is probably because Warner wants to take this opportunity to soften the overly cold Batman image created by Nolan before. Have fun playing with other friends of the Justice League.
