We barely blinked, and the year has already reached its halfway point, and we have already started warming up for what's to come in theaters in the upcoming months until December. One of the genres that always catches the attention of movie enthusiasts, due to its true legion of fans and followers, is horror. And here it's no different, as this page was born out of a passion for the most terrifying genre of all.
With that in mind, we have decided to join in and now unveil our list of the 10 most anticipated horror movies for 2023.
10 | True Haunting
We will have yet another exorcism film in 2023. This one has a very interesting premise and is based on a true story. The movie tells the story of the first televised exorcism in history, which aired in 1971 on the American network NBC. The channel's ratings skyrocketed, making it a success. However, things took a turn for the worse for the family at the location of the exorcism. Erin Moriarty, the Starlight from the hit series The Boys, takes the lead role, alongside Jamie Campbell Bower, who played Vecna in Stranger Things. Directed by Gary Fleder, known for the classic Kiss the Girls (1997).
09 | Cuckoo
Starring trans actress Hunter Schafer, known for her role as Jules in the HBO series Euphoria, this conceptual and mysterious horror movie is about a young woman who is pursued by a psychotic woman after moving with her family to a resort. The family is trying to cope with the trauma of losing their mother, and now the protagonist must fight for her life and that of her sister. The cast is completed by Dan Stevens and Jessica Henwick.
08 | The Salem Vampires
Jumping from demons and exorcists to vampires on our list. This Warner Bros. blockbuster was postponed from 2022 to this year - and it hasn't set a release date yet, possibly being delayed again to 2024. However, we hope to see it in 2023. The film is based on one of Stephen King's early books and has already been adapted for the screen as a TV miniseries divided into two episodes. The plot follows an author who returns to his small town in the United States only to discover that it is slowly being taken over by a horde of vampires. The story served as the basis for the Netflix miniseries Midnight Mass.
07 | Five Nights at Freddy's
Based on the famous video game, the story revolves around a night guard at a pizzeria who discovers that spending the night on duty can be more dangerous than he imagines. It turns out that during the night, the animatronic dolls come to life in a terrifying way and plan to kill him. The idea is very intriguing, but the movie Willy's Wonderland - starring Nicolas Cage - beat it to the punch with a similar story in 2021.
06 | The Nun 2
The "Conjuring Universe" created by director James Wan at Warner Bros. quickly became a gold mine. Right from the start, The Conjuring (2013) generated spin-offs before its first sequel in 2016, such as the spin-off featuring the demonic doll Annabelle - which had two sequels. Now it's time for the second film featuring the demonic nun from the painting to get its sequel. The original film from 2018 was successful enough to warrant another production, with Michael Chaves returning as the director and Taissa Farmiga reprising her role.
