The cinematic landscape saw a surge of activity this weekend with four major films making their debut. Leading the pack was “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” raking in $23 million from box office sales, as per Sunday's studio reports.
These four films - “PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie,” “Saw X,” “The Creator,” and “Dumb Money” - painted a predictable narrative at the box office. Animated and horror franchises proved successful, whereas original and comedic ventures seemed to fall short.
Timing was in favor of “PAW Patrol,” a collaborative venture between Paramount Pictures and Spin Master. This sequel, following the 2021 “PAW Patrol” film, which itself was based on the popular Nickelodeon TV series, was the first animated family feature since “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” premiered in August.
The inaugural “PAW Patrol,” which had a dual release in theaters and on Paramount+ during the pandemic, garnered an impressive $13 million. Its success across both platforms played a role in promoting Nickelodeon's Brian Robbins to the pinnacle of Paramount. The third installment of “PAW Patrol” is already in the pipeline.
With a production budget of $30 million, “Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” accumulated an additional $23.1 million from international markets.

Rebounding from a franchise dip, “Saw X,” the latest in the enduring horror saga, secured an impressive $18 million for Lionsgate during its opening weekend. To contrast, the preceding installment, 2021’s “Spiral” with Chris Rock, opened to $8.8 million and ended at $23.3 million in domestic collections.
The latest “Saw” emphasized graphic content and welcomed back Tobin Bell in his iconic role as the serial killer Jigsaw. Its debut was the franchise's best in over a decade, resonating well with audiences.
This $13-million venture also had the most extensive release in the "Saw" series, screening in 3,262 venues. From its inception in 2004 by James Wan, the "Saw" series, a pioneer in the "torture porn" genre, has grossed over $1 billion globally.
Despite being the weekend's most significant release, “The Creator,” a hefty $80 million project backed by New Regency and distributed by Disney’s 20th Century Studios, had a lukewarm reception, collecting just $14 million at 3,680 theaters. Internationally, it made an additional $18.3 million.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, “The Creator” features John David Washington navigating an AI-driven future as a covert agent. The movie, while mostly well-received, earned a B+ CinemaScore from its viewers.
Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money,” after two weeks of a limited run, expanded its reach but struggled to captivate audiences, securing only $3.5 million across 2,837 venues.
“Dumb Money,” boasting a stellar cast including Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, Seth Rogen, American Ferrera, and Anthony Ramos, revolves around the GameStop stock chaos, painting a narrative of novice traders shaking up Wall Street. While all new releases faced challenges due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, “Dumb Money” would have notably profited from its star-studded cast making promotional appearances.
While “Dumb Money” with its $30 million budget was not a colossal gamble, it epitomizes a genre - moderately budgeted, critically-praised originals targeting mature audiences - that's becoming a rarity in Hollywood. As the film industry braces for an awards season, following a year where many anticipated contenders, including “Tár” and “The Fabelmans,” didn't resonate in theaters, “Dumb Money's” performance might serve as a warning sign for upcoming releases.
Another weekend highlight was the 4K revival of the Talking Heads' 40-year-old concert film “Stop Making Sense,” which danced its way to $1 million across 786 screens. To date, the Jonathan Demme-directed movie has surpassed $3 million. Indie powerhouse A24 believes it will keep "audiences dancing in the aisles worldwide for a considerable duration."
