As we approach the holiday season, there's no need to put your horror movie marathon on hold. You can opt for one of the all-time best horror movies or go for one of the most terrifying classics, but perhaps you're in the mood for something fresh.
This year has treated us to new installments of classic horror series like "Scream," "Saw," and "The Evil Dead," as well as thrilling and spine-chilling newcomers like "Talk to Me," and "No One Will Save You." However, these are not the only new horror films worth your attention.
If you're looking to catch up on the scares of 2023, we've taken a retrospective look at the year so far to select the top horror movies – and where you can stream them right now.
"Talk to Me"
Danny and Michael Philippou's directorial debut, 'Talk to Me,' has been the talk of the town this year, thanks to its unique premise - a hand that communicates with the dead - and Sophie Wilde's remarkable breakout performance.
A sequel is already in the works, titled 'Talk 2 Me,' suggesting we're in for another iconic hit.
"Evil Dead Rise"
Who would have thought that a new take on the 'Evil Dead' franchise could be this impressive? In 2023, we find ourselves praising Lee Cronin's 'Evil Dead Rise,' a masterful exploration of the horrors hidden within the Necronomicon.
Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland deliver outstanding performances, earning their place among the best in horror and beyond this year. Let's hope future installments continue to introduce fresh locations and, more importantly, new Deadites to keep this undead franchise alive indefinitely.
"No One Will Save You"
Much like last year's 'Prey,' Brian Duffield's 'No One Will Save You' relies on minimal dialogue, creating an extraterrestrial face-off that is as captivating as it is tense.
With its imaginative script and precise direction, this movie stands out as one of the year's finest horror films. Add Kaitlyn Dever's nearly wordless performance into the mix, and you'll wonder why awards season often overlooks genre performances as compelling as this one.
"Saw X"
After years of attempting to make us squirm at the sight of John Kramer's gruesome traps, 'Saw X' took a different approach by making Jigsaw the protagonist.
This not only provides Tobin Bell with the acting spotlight he deserves but also has audiences rooting for his traps to succeed, adding a sick and brilliant twist to the franchise that keeps it relevant even after ten movies.
"M3GAN"
No horror film this year has combined campy fun and creepy doll action quite like 'M3GAN.' It's a perfect blend that feels like it was crafted by a genius algorithm.
However, only 'M3GAN' herself could come up with those sassy one-liners, and she's too busy flipping around and observing Cady to be bothered with such trivial human matters. With a confirmed sequel on the horizon, the beloved killer-robot-doll franchise is here to stay.
