At the close of 2023, Warner unveiled its highly anticipated 'Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom' to audiences on the big screen. (The following text will be referred to as 'Aquaman 2' for brevity.)
Even as someone not deeply entrenched in the DC universe, my post-viewing reflection on 'Aquaman 2' remains notably positive. It holds its ground among many superhero films, offering a compelling narrative.
To begin with, unlike some of Marvel's 2023 releases that seemed to prioritize political correctness over plot integrity, 'Aquaman 2' refrains from sacrificing its storyline. Admittedly, from a different angle, the film's plot is inherently politically correct.
From the brooding prince in the previous installment to the reigning king of Atlantis in the sequel, Arthur remains steadfast in his identity as a bridge between two worlds. In the sequel's opening, faced with a contentious Atlantis council, King Arthur strives to prove through actions that the ocean and land worlds can coexist harmoniously. By the film's end, Arthur, now the Sea King, successfully realizes this vision, initiating active communication between the long-concealed kingdom of Atlantis and the land world.
Moving on, the film's thematic continuity with its predecessor lies in exploring family and kinship. The story follows Arthur, the queen of Atlantis, and their child, who was born to ordinary humans. Arthur inherits superpowers, granting him seamless communication with marine life and extraordinary speed and strength. The narrative unfolds as Arthur navigates the teachings of his father and Atlantis minister Vulko, balancing superhuman abilities with a profound appreciation for life. Unbeknownst to the adult Arthur raised on land, his half-brother Orm, now the ruler of Atlantis, recklessly seeks war with the land world. The story takes unexpected turns as the Black Manta, once a pirate, blames Arthur for his father's death and joins forces with Orm. To prevent catastrophe, Arthur seeks the lost Trident of Poseidon, defeats Orm and Black Manta, and ascends to the throne as the king of Atlantis.
The grandeur of 'Aquaman' lies in its expansive world-building—the awe-inspiring underwater kingdom of Atlantis, the imminent war between worlds, and the extensive history of the underwater realm.
Yet, what truly captivates is the emotional journey woven throughout the film. Be it the poignant love story of Arthur's parents or Arthur's resolute shouldering of responsibilities amid family and love burdens, the resolution of the strained brotherly relationship is heartwarming.
In 2018, the first 'Aquaman' film left room for the sequel's continuation of the conflicted brotherly story. In the sequel, the defeated Black Manta is saved by the eccentric scientist Dr. Shen, setting the stage for his resurgence with the mysterious Black Trident. Blinded by hatred, Black Manta aims to destroy the world. To save the world and mend his bond with Orm, Aquaman Arthur embarks on a mission to rescue Orm and defend Atlantis.
Apart from Arthur and Orm, the sequel introduces Arthur's super-powered son, 'Little Arthur,' expanding the family and kinship theme. In the original comic, Black Manta killed Little Arthur, creating deep hatred between him and Arthur. The unfolding of this character in 'Aquaman 2' promises surprises.
Lastly, the film's action scenes and audio-visual experience deserve attention. Despite the years since 'Aquaman,' the sequel maintains expectations with well-crafted action sequences and world-building, delivering an immersive experience.
From the exhilarating underwater chase to the intense desert rescue and thrilling jungle parkour, the action scenes instill a sense of urgency and crisis. As Arthur and Orm's adventure unfolds, viewers witness a more diverse and uniquely characterized fantasy world than the previous installment—from the underwater night market to the desert prison, from the ice-bound kingdom to the splendid Atlantis.
The scenes in The Lost Kingdom evoke a chilling atmosphere, the retro-cyber style of underwater technology, and the bizarre creatures spanning marine and land environments. 'Aquaman 2' offers an unparalleled experience, showcasing James Wan's creative brilliance. Despite diverse scenes and rich film elements, he seamlessly integrates different settings, film elements, and unique creatures into a highly unified film style.
The release of 'Aquaman' in 2018 injected vitality into the struggling DC cinematic universe, offering audiences breathtaking visual spectacles. While today's viewers may be less easily impressed by visual wonders alone, James Wan's interwoven emotional storylines in 'Aquaman 2' continue to draw audiences closer to the film in an unexpected manner.
As the conclusive punctuation mark for the decade-long DC cinematic universe, I am inclined to give this film a positive review.
