After playing second fiddle for two consecutive weeks at the box office, trailing behind the Broadway adaptation of "Mean Girls" musical, Jason Statham's unconventional action hit, "The Beekeeper," has now taken the lead.
Though it was an unusually hushed weekend at the movie theaters, "The Beekeeper" managed to break the silence and secure the first-place position with earnings of $7.4 million.
This latest triumph has propelled the film's domestic earnings to a total of over $42 million. Coupled with its international grosses, which are approaching $62 million, "The Beekeeper" has now amassed a grand total of more than $104 million worldwide.
In a somewhat less impressive performance during its third weekend, "Mean Girls" slipped into the second spot, experiencing a more than 37% drop from the previous weekend.
The musical generated $7.3 million in revenue, pushing its North American earnings close to the $61 million mark. However, its success overseas has been comparatively modest, with earnings of just $22.6 million, resulting in a global total of more than $83 million.
Taking the third position is another musical, "Wonka," the song and dance prequel to the classic Gene Wilder film. This movie garnered $5.9 million during its seventh weekend run. Domestically, it has raked in more than $195 million, and internationally, it has outperformed, with earnings nearing $357 million. Globally, "Wonka" has accumulated more than $552 million thus far.
Maintaining its fourth place at the weekend box office is "Migration," which occupied the same spot the previous weekend.
The animated family comedy experienced a minor 5% drop in earnings compared to the previous weekend, collecting $5.2 million in revenue and pushing its American earnings past the $101 million milestone. On the international front, it has generated nearly $105 million, resulting in a global gross of over $206 million so far.
In fifth place, "Anyone but You," the R-rated romantic comedy, continues to perform consistently, with only an 11% drop in earnings this weekend.
The movie added another $4.8 million to its domestic box office earnings, which now approach $72 million. A feat that was unimaginable to box office analysts when it first debuted six weeks ago. It has also raked in an additional $55.4 million overseas, resulting in a worldwide box office total of nearly $127 million to date.
Beyond the top five, two movies that received Best Picture Academy Award nominations last week experienced substantial improvements in their weekend earnings.
The whimsical and unique sci-fi comedy-drama, "Poor Things," saw a remarkable 43% jump from the previous weekend, earning $3.04 million and securing the sixth position. Meanwhile, the satirical "American Fiction" experienced an even more impressive 65% increase from the previous weekend, bringing in $2.9 million.
