"Imaginary" is a 2024 American fantasy horror film directed by Jeff Wadlow. Can imagination affect the real world, making it difficult for children to detach and affect their relationships with family and friends? These concerns form the core of "Imaginary."
DeWanda Wise portrays Jessica, the protagonist of "Imaginary," a children's book author who becomes a stepmother to two girls after marrying musician Max. However, she is plagued by nightmares, often waking up at night startled by her mentally ill father or the fictional spider character from her books. Although she has moved back to her childhood home, where she has been since she was five, the comfortable house is prepared for a new life, yet new challenges arise.
Despite Jessica's desire to be a good mother and quickly bond with her two daughters, her 15-year-old stepdaughter Taylor is going through a rebellious phase. Unable to accept someone replacing her mother and invading her life so quickly, Taylor is hostile towards Jessica. Meanwhile, although obedient and sensible, Alice, played by Pyper Braun, has not yet recovered from the trauma of separating from her birth mother, providing an opportunity for the sinister villain.

One day, Alice discovers a teddy bear doll named Chauncey in the basement and quickly connects with it, becoming fast friends. At the same time, this seems like a good thing for everyone in "Imaginary," with Alice, who is usually gloomy, finally showing genuine smiles, and the overall atmosphere in the house gradually improving, Jessica finding inspiration for her drawings and meeting her deadlines, beneath the facade of a bright future lies hidden dangers.
As Alice's best "imaginary friend," Chauncey accompanies her day and night, spending many lonely moments together and initiating a unique treasure hunt game. Alice says it's a game Chauncey wants her to play. Everything seems like part of the game, but as they search for things that frighten her, things that could hurt her, and things that could get her in trouble, not only do the contents become increasingly unsettling, but Jessica also realizes that something is wrong and begins to investigate the secrets behind the teddy bear doll.

Despite not having the scale of other big-budget productions, it still succeeds through its story and overall atmosphere. Just like Chauncey, who is only a doll but has an intense possessiveness, using various means to scare or sabotage those who want to get close to Alice or separate them, the film's first half creates a sense of eerie horror through the contrast between the characters, achieving the goal of a horror film.
However, "Imaginary" is not as simple as it seems on the surface. In addition to being a killer doll movie, with Alice disappearing after completing the treasure hunt game, the director uses Jessica's desperate search to explore her inner world, revealing her childhood memories with Chauncey, why she moved away from her hometown at the age of five and went to live with her grandmother. The truth behind her nightmares and Chauncey's secrets are unveiled in the latter half of the film, leading to unexpected developments.
Rather than being a typical Blumhouse film, I believe "Imaginary" leans more towards a fantasy thriller suitable for teenagers. To find the missing Alice, Jessica learns that she also had an imaginary friend before, delving into her long-buried childhood memories, opening the door to fantasy, and taking her 15-year-old stepdaughter Taylor into Chauncey's dark and mysterious world. The story's development, where they work together to resolve their differences and rescue their daughter/sister, adds an exciting twist to the film.
Although we often long for childhood innocence, behind the carefree life may lurk many dangers, such as the monsters under the bed or in the closet, which are childhood shadows we still can't forget. Therefore, I appreciate the core of "Imaginary," where the comforting and comforting "imaginary friends" can also be invaded by demons and take advantage of children's vulnerability. Through the love parents give their children in the film, we can find the warmest protection in these terrifying memories.
"Imaginary" truly captures the essence of Stephen King's works. Although it may not have the intense shock of "Pet Sematary" or the solid mysterious atmosphere of "In the Tall Grass," it shares similarities with "It," creating a dark world created by evil "imaginary friends" against the backdrop of frequent cases of missing children across America. With children's creative and imaginative characteristics, the film diverges from other "killer doll films," offering a different fantasy style that deserves recognition.
Overall, "Imaginary" explores the potentially harmful effects of children imagining seemingly harmless companions to alleviate loneliness, leading to inexplicable behavior or self-harm. The subject matter is intriguing, and the eerie atmosphere in the first half of the film makes it a competent horror film. While the later plot developments may not meet the audience's original expectations, and the film may receive polarized reviews, the underlying parent-child emotions still bring a heartwarming conclusion, leaving everyone to leave the theater with a smile.
