Beforehand, this review will focus mainly on mistakes, D&D (scriptwriters) made trying to understand characters motivation and ambitions.
First group of fans tend to think that the fall of their favorite series started with 8th season, since the rating of it was disastrous. The second group, book readers, believe that series collapse started with 5th season, since it was the first season which was not based on the books.
I personally think that the fall started with a single episode - "The children" (4th season 10th episode). You most likely do not remember what that episode was about: The episode Jamie releases Tyrion and later on Tyrion kills Tywin.
You might be wondering: what was so bad about it? I will tell you - a single detail that was decided to ignore: Tysha - the first love and wife of Tyrion who turned out to be a whore bought by Jamie for Tyrion in secret. However, in source material, she was not a whore, the feeling that she felt for Tyrion was real and Jamie reveals it right after releasing him. Showrunners failed to understand the real inner world of Tyrion: he did not kill his father for sentencing him to death, Tywin tried to kill him multiple times and Tyrion does not really seem to be bothered by it. He did it because he knew about Tysha, he knew that the only chance of being happy was taken from him and he did not knew about it. And even the revenge on his father could not heal that wound.
Do you remember Tyrion in the last season? His development ended in that episode - he killed Tywin for sentencing him to death and that is it. He became spinless, he had no ambition or desires. Showrunners had no idea what to do with him afterwards, so he was just following Daenerys till the end of the series.
Do we really want to see this kind of Tyrion? Don't we want to see the rage of the broken man who sets the world on fire and desires to destroy it? It would have kept Tyrion in game, he could have became someone like second Littlefinger, but instead, we got Daenerys' good boy who sometimes mocks Varys for being castrated.
The second mistake, made in the same season, I want to point out touches a character which was not shown in the show. But before that, let's discuss Varys, his actions and motivation.
We tend to think that Varys is the brilliant spy master who does everything in order to make a life of small folk better, he is the "servant of the realm". The realm he was not even born in. ( He is from Essos if you do not remember).
Moreover, all his actions indicate otherwise. Why would not he help Ned Stark to escape but helped Tyrion. Why would he help Tywin get through Kings Landing's gates, so he can set the city on fire and kill lots of common folk? Why he tends to think that Lannister dictatorship is better than rule of the one true king - Stannis Baratheon? And most important - why would he let Littlefinger plunge the realm into the chaos?
It is pretty simple - because he is not "servant of the realm", but another player who desires put his man onto the throne. The man Varys wants put onto the throne and the character who would've made the series much more interesting - Young Griff. I do not want to dive into the books lore but he is the guy golden company is sworn to.
It means that there would've been another major player with a large and most battle-experienced army which would have made the series much more interesting.
In this review I pointed out one minor and one major mistake, which brought series into falling. I chose specifically them since I want to point out that lack of understanding of the characters lead the show into its downfall
