I feel like Movies and Tv shows are getting worse and worse as time goes on. Here are some of my points:
Over-Reliance on Reboots and Remakes:
Many studios seem to focus on remaking or rebooting old movies and TV shows instead of creating fresh, original content. This lack of originality often results in predictable plots and uninspired storytelling. I’m not saying it’s bad but there comes a time when too much is too much. Many movies have made Reboots and Remakes that were better than the original but that was only when the idea was expanded and improved.
Excessive Focus on Franchise and Brand:
It feels like more and more films and shows are being made with the sole focus of building or expanding existing franchises, like superhero films or shared universes. While these can be enjoyable, it often leads to formulaic content that feels less creative or fresh. Also, what if I want to see a cool movie but I won’t understand anything if I haven’t seen the last 10 years of the same franchise. (Don’t say don’t watch it, I still will, I’ll just be confused)
Decline in Writing Quality:
Many recent movies and TV shows seem to prioritize visual effects, flashy action scenes, or star power over strong storytelling. As a result, plotlines can feel shallow or rushed, with characters lacking depth and development.
Streaming Overload:
The rise of streaming platforms has led to an overwhelming number of shows and movies. While there are some hidden gems, the sheer volume can make it harder to find quality content, with many shows or films feeling like filler or quickly produced content. Also, I'm broke and they are expensive.
Nostalgia Overload:
There's been a growing trend to cater to older audiences by rehashing nostalgic content. While nostalgia can be comforting, it often results in a lack of innovation or new ideas that move the medium forward. I love when there's Nostalgia in movies, but seriously, many just think of the money and not the audience. I'm looking at you Disney!
Audience Manipulation:
Many shows and movies seem more focused on catering to social media trends or what will generate buzz, rather than telling a meaningful or unique story. This can make content feel more like a marketing tool than a piece of art (which we all know is true).
Loss of Risk-Taking:
In the past, many movies and TV shows felt bold and daring, taking risks with storytelling, characters, and themes. Now, it feels like most content plays it safe, with studios afraid to take creative chances that might not appeal to the masses. This annoys me to no end. Like, you could've been so good if you just took a step further!
Excessive Use of CGI Over Practical Effects:
While CGI has revolutionized filmmaking, it often feels overused in recent movies and TV shows, leading to scenes that feel artificial or lack the weight and realism that practical effects once brought. This can take away from the emotional impact or immersion of the story. Many movies were made with millions of dollars and still look terrible, how does that happen?!
Diminished Cultural and Genre Diversity:
There used to be a broader range of genres and unique cultural perspectives in movies and TV shows, allowing for more diverse storytelling. Now, much of the content feels like it follows a mainstream template, with less focus on niche genres or diverse voices that bring something new to the table. Of course there are a few which are really great, but sometimes it feels like you just wanted to make a western movie with a bunch of diversity just because.
ok, rant done!
