If you haven’t seen it yet, the basic plot is like this. Donny, a struggling comedian/bartender in London, serves a depressed woman a cup of tea “on the house” one day. That woman, Martha, then becomes obsessed with Donny and starts stalking him. The plot is based on the real experience of Richard Gadd, who plays Donny, and while I won’t spoil everything that happens, let’s just say that escaping abuse is not as simple as just ending a relationship.
My favourite part of the show is how it shows portrays stalking with an impressive level of nuance. Even though Martha is stalking Donny, it’s clear that she isn’t a “bad person”. At the end of the day, she’s just a very ill woman who isn’t being given the help she needs. Her personal struggles don’t excuse the damage she inflicts on others, though. We see how her stalking destroys Donny’s life, making him paranoid and putting everything from his job to his relationships in jeopardy.
