The Bonds Been Broken...Why Is Prime so Foolish?

I spotted an article on Forbes just now detailing how Amazon Prime has chosen to cancel their number two-rated show, The Bondsman, that is currently still in the Top 10 List, and I am truly scratching my head and asking myself why?

This show just premiered on April 2, 2025, and it came in with a great reception, having Kevin Bacon as the headline main character in a show that has similar connotations to the RIPD (Rest In Peace Department,) which consequently Kevin was also in alongside Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges.

Only this time, Kevin has been thrust into a role where he's got more of a supernatural law enforcement officer than he did in RIPD.

In The Bondsman, Kevin plays the murdered bounty hunter, Hub Halloran, who is resurrected by the Devil to trap and send back demons that have escaped from the prison of Hell. Hub begins chasing down these demons with the help and hindrance of his estranged family, and learns how his sins in life got his soul condemned, which pushes him to seek a second chance at life, love, and even country music.

The show has a fabulous soundtrack, and great moments of dark comedy paired some pretty awesome moments of Kevin driving a badass muscle car. I can't see any reason why audiences wouldn't love it just off those things alone. But, bringing in people such as Beth Grant to play Hub's mother, Kitty Halloran and her interesting euphemisms regularly used makes it have moments of levity that I found both refreshing and comical. Hub's character is one who is gritty, haunted and memorable which are all things that I feel lend to staying power with any main character, but having someone as well versed in acting and legendary as Kevin Bacon…well, we are talking about horror royalty when it comes to Friday the 13th and the many notable works Kevin has under his belt.

It helps that he's got excellent talent on the small screen too, which is something I recall distinctly from my love of his character on The Following, Ryan Hardy. This is another television show that I feel ended way too early, and I could write an entire article about on that note.

But, I digress - because this is about the recent development of canning something that is undeniably good.

And, it leaves me grasping to understand the logic behind this announcement, and shocking the news is?

Doesn't Prime want to produce successful content that makes and stays in the Top Ten list? It has not even been two months since it premiered, and they only launched it with eight total episodes, however, it ended with there be a hint to continuance and wasn't marketeted as a miniseries which is leaving fans (and me) wondering why this is becoming a going trend in content we like? Considering that people pay a subscription for content they enjoy, this makes very little sense.

So, Prime, why are you doing this?

There seems to be crickets where this question is concerned, and I went searching through quite a bit, showing that Prime has chosen to stay tight-lipped, and leaving all of us in the dark.

I don't see them citing the viewership as a problem because the stats are showing it is a well-received show that is contending well and holding strong at number two. This is no small feat, and should be a sign that people want to keep watching this show and have become invested in it. That makes me wonder if it's not cost-related because we all recognize that Kevin is an A-list actor, and rightfully so. I have no clue what his salary is for each episode, but perhaps they couldn't negotiate a cost for a new season that fit his needs.

Again, speculation - nothing more.

That makes me wonder if maybe it could be related to how many people are committed to watching things in regularity, or not but it seems like most people prefer binge watching their series in one session when they are capable of doing so, and The Bondsman was outfitted for that sort of release - eight episodes released altogether so people could view them over their weekend and then move on.

Nevertheless, it is on Prime now, and if you haven't already watched it, check it out.

Maybe, if enough of us push back while they're working out the next season's contracts, they'll change their mind and reconsider giving Hub Halloran more airtime and us more understanding of his charismatic and fascinating character?
