Hey Peliplaters!

I'm sure you've noticed how much Short Stories have taken over Peliplat lately. We have original story writing challenges, and now a dedicated home for all your fiction in the Stories tab. We truly believe the best stories end up making the best movies, so this was the natural addition to the Peliplat-universe.

As the next part of my How to Peliplat series, here are some tips and best practices for writing and posting short stories on Peliplat!

💡 Don’t Wait for the Perfect Draft 💡

My first piece of advice is probably the most important one: use Peliplat as your testing ground.

Your stories here don't need to be final, they're not written in stone. Use Peliplat to test ideas, try new styles, and see what connects with readers. Sometimes the most interesting stories are the ones that are still evolving!

Don’t wait until you think your writing is “good enough.” Start where you are, share your work, and let the Peliplat community be part of your creative process.

Your opening will make our break your reader's engagement!

Try:

Starting in the middle of a moment
Introducing a question or mystery
Creating an immediate emotional conflict
A vivid image they can't ignore

Avoid:

Spending too long explaining the backstory
Adding filler until the “interesting” part begins

🎯 Focus on One Big Idea 🎯

Short stories are short for a reason, don’t try to do everything at once.

While you're writing, try asking yourself these questions:

What is this story really about?
What moment changes everything?
What is the emotional turning point?
What feeling do I want readers to leave with?

🌎 Create an Atmosphere 🌎

Peliplaters tend to be visual and emotionally-driven readers. They remember feelings like they remember plots. Use small details to help make your story feel real and tangible.

Sounds
Textures
Objects
Sensory details

Instead of telling: “They were nervous,”
Try showing: “The character avoided eye contact and checked the door twice.”

Readers connect with what they can see, hear, and feel.

📝 Every Sentence Counts 📝

Just like I said earlier, short stories don't have time for filler! Think of each sentence as a immovable force.

Every line should either:

Move the story forward
Reveal something about a character
Build the mood
Create curiousity

🌟 End With Something Memorable 🌟

A strong ending doesn’t always need to be tied up neatly with a bow, or reveal a huge twist.

An impactful ending can also be:

A final image
A new perspective
A question, or an unanswered question
An emotional realization

Those will leave your readers wanting more!

📣 Let Your Voice Be Heard 📣

Your best weapon as a writer is who you are as a person and the lived experience that informs your work.

Don’t worry about sounding “professional" or “seasoned” - there are endless stories online, but yours will stand out because it comes from you. Focus on creating something specific, honest, and memorable.

📖 Make It Easy to Read 📖

Formatting matters! No one wants to read a big chunk of unbroken text.

Try:

Short paragraphs
Dialogue breaks
Clear spacing
Horizontal Line dividers
Images to break up text (I like looking up inspo photos on Pinterest!)

Before your hit post, go over this checklist in your head:

☐ Does the opening make me curious?
☐ Does every paragraph serve a purpose and move the story forward?
☐ Can readers understand what the feeling I'm going for?
☐ Did I leave room for the reader’s imagination?

It's not essential to check every box, but it's handy to keep your eye on the prize.
