Recently I shared a discussion with the Peliplat community about their thoughts on the franchise. After comments related to their optimism following Evil Dead Rise but some what doubtful, my mission became not just to watch Evil Dead Burn for my personal pleasure but also to review it. Here are my thoughts.
This Installment can be seen even if you haven't seen the previews films, but it helps if you know the mythology. Yet, it's a thing of its own. Directed by French filmmaker Sébastien Vanicek, Evil Dead Burn brings new ideas to the lore despite of the usual narrative structure that has come along with a every installment, he elevates the violence with a French Extremity touch (Martyrs, High Tension) and brings a sense of claustrophobia thanks to the use of the most creative camera work since the first trilogy. This kind of violence has the gore associated with the franchise but the director focused on making the violence painful rather than disgusting (like a pen stuck in someone's ear). Emotional kind of violence through the backstory of Alice that I wouldn't if that haven't gone too far, it would not work unless it enhances the sorrow of the main character after having almost everything lost. However, violence (visual and emotional) and dread is restless even before having any drop of blood, including a scene that involves a dog.
Some rules may be broken in the lore, that can upset people, but I dare to disagree with them. The Evil Dead franchise was almost born to be different and when fans could think the next installment is a lack of respect from the previous one or it's simply not an Evil Dead movie, is a misunderstanding. Let's find out why is a natural thing for the Evil Dead.
It has happened to Every Dead film, fans get divisive and complaint from time to time. During the production of Evil Dead 2 part of the crew believed that Sam Raimi was out of his mind because the movie didn't look like the original Evil Dead, since he added comedy and may turned into a flop. In Army of Darkness basically happened something similar, for a long time, movie buffs ignored this sequel because it had almost none of the horror that the franchise was known for (the opposite of what people say about the installments from this century) and sadly affected the box office so bad that put the IP to sleep for a whole while. Far into the future, a new Evil Dead released in 2013 and a new generation of fans got divisive, some embracing the new take but others complained the absence of Ash Williams (they keep doing it) and didn't have the identity Sam Raimi gave. The identity of what makes an Evil Dead film was brought to the table when Evil Dead Rise arrived, including the departure from the cabin.
The past paragraph is meant to give context on the controversy that never goes away for every single Evil Dead movie released but people seem to forget until becomes today's news again, Evil Dead Burn is being neglected as a chapter for the saga by some proclaimed fans. For anyone reading and thinking “Does This Changes Make Sense?” (even if I gave historical context), I take a risk and guarantee you with a big Yes, and it makes more sense in the narrative than people think. Here is how.
Without getting too much into spoiler territory, every time an incantation from the Necronomicon Ex Mortis is spelled brings a change in their delivery, Ash Williams in Army of Darkness, for example, struggled to pronounce a spell and found out that an incantation can alter a portal or even how every demonic Deadite manifest or even come with new skills. In other words, every installment a Deadite can alter the aspect of the living being to posses and bring unexpected kinds of deadly tricks. Here the Fire element becomes predominant as if this kind of Deadites belonged to a higher hierarchy in Hell and had an specific purpose to arrive in order to prevent the resurgence of a so-called The Circle of the Wise Men , after years the family's patriarch was part of this top secret cult and made research of demons to know how to defend. As a result, he and other members came up with a copy of a Kandarian daggar (The original has been lost somewhere ever since Ash Williams showed up for a last time). That's why the remaining family members being possessed seem to serve a serious purpose more than the classic havok Deadites enjoy causing. If we the words from the priest's recording from Evil Dead Rise, we can paraphrase his frustration when burning, burring and chopping his possessed colleagues. Finding out Deadites will never be entirely dead until a Kandarian dagger stabs the possessed, this extra information will make way more sense once you see the Post-Credits scene.
Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert made a choice sustained through years of planning to bring back the franchise, amid the resurgence revivals motivated by simple Nostalgia-Fueled Cash cowing. They have selected new talented filmmakers to direct every new installment, naturally giving a fresh new take in movie and even if the script structure is basic (I hope they dare to change sooner than later), audiences would never know what to expect exactly from every new anthological chapter of Deadites mischievous adventures.
I want to invite you to give a better chance to Evil Dead Burn if you appreciate the legacy of this three friends from Michigan, it's fate is still in their hands and every installment have aged surprisingly good. This may not be for favorite one in the future but there wiil always be a next one you will enjoy. As long as these three savvy minds have the mighty chainsaw away from excessive studio interference.
