I don’t really know what came over me that I decided to binge the series Heartstopper just weeks before the release of the film that would bring a conclusion to this successful show. Now that this story is over, I can’t help but feel a bit of sadness, but also feel mostly satisfied with the way they managed to conclude this cute queer narrative.
Most stories, if not all of them, are finite. Some have an ending that makes people grateful to have been able to accompany them, on the other hand, there are a few endings that bring that sensation of a job well done, but that such story didn’t necessarily need to end there and there could be more to be told. This is how I felt watching Heartstopper Forever. While creator and writer Alice Oseman managed to deliver a heartfelt ending to Charlie and Nick’s relationship, their characters’ arch, as well as the others, gave me an impression that their stories had more to offer than just a sweet, yet predictable ending. In other words, there was more to explore in my opinion, but that is how they decided to finish this chapter, and I’m alright with that.
Though I don’t consider myself part of the LGBTQ+ community, I’m obliged to recognize that their work in the entertainment industry is just as relevant and impactful as narratives involving heterosexual relationships. So much that Nick and Charlie’s blooming romance is one of the most beautiful and sweet examples of a couple there is, even for people who aren’t queer like me. Their relationship evolves from a mutual friendship to a love story that, like every other, isn’t perfect but has demonstrations of courage, trust and respect.
For those who have watched the first three seasons, we initially see Charlie as the one struggling with mental health issues and showing more vulnerability, but in the film it is Nick who is feeling more insecure about himself and not fully embracing his identity as a person. There even are moments where both boys argue about their differences, but that not only makes their relationship more realistic but helps them grow as individuals and strengthen their bond.
Speaking of mental health struggles, the way both the series and film portray such aspect deserves high praise for giving the audience a chance to relate to the characters’ flaws or shortcomings and offer them a realistic and positive way out of it.
Heartstopper Forever is more than just a continuation of a beloved series - it’s a heartfelt culmination of years of storytelling that has resonated with audiences worldwide. By following Nick, Charlie, and their friends into adulthood, the film captures the bittersweet beauty of growing up while staying true to the tenderness and authenticity that made Heartstopper a cultural touchstone. It reminds us that love, friendship, and self-discovery are journeys without neat endings, but with infinite possibilities.
In 2026, this film doesn’t simply close a chapter; it affirms its enduring legacy as a story that will continue to inspire, comfort, and empower generations to come.
