Watch: Steven Soderbergh Gives His Thoughts on Film School at #TIFF2024

This year at TIFF, I was lucky enough to see a talk by one of my favourite filmmakers, Steven Soderbergh. Soderbergh spoke on a variety of subjects, from his upbringing to his thoughts on the film industry today, and I was able to capture (on my Android potato phone), his response when asked if young filmmakers should go to film school. Check out his thoughts below:

The age old question! Love this answer though. He's absolutely right. Finding your collaborators is so important.

He's honest and right! I went to the film school of UC Santa Cruz, and I enjoyed the vibe a lot. As I watch this video, I come to realize that the true reason I wanted to attend film school was that I need to do it as to confirm it as something I really really care about. To be honest, I was many times disappointed by the industry and life in general after I left school, and I also questioned myself many times, would it be better if I majored in something more "practical". However, what's more often was that I continued to gain power and nutrition from the decision I made to attend film school, because every time I wanted to give up, that experience keeps me reminding: "Hey, I cared about it so much, and I still care." It's like a light house. One way or another life is never easy, and we need to be matured. I'm happy that I found my strength in film school.
