Daniel Kwan

Biography

"Filmmaking has a lot to do with limitations, essentializing and figuring out what you really want to do." Daniel Kwan is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer known primarily as one half of the directing duo "Daniels", with Daniel Scheinert. They met studying film at Emerson College, in Boston, and began directing music videos. In 2016, they expanded into writing and directing feature films and made Swiss Army Man (2016), a darkly humorous comedy-drama starring Daniel Radcliffe. With this film, they won the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival. Daniels' most notable work is Everything Everywhere all at Once (2022), which received wide acclaim for its innovative and complex approach, blending elements of fantasy, absurdist humor and emotional storytelling. The film was nominated for eleven Academy Awards and won seven of them, including Best Director and Best Picture. The deep emotionality in Kwan' films made him a respected director, despite his short career.
