Franco Lolli

Biography

“I like to talk about characters that are going through situations where emotions overflow. That’s when people show who they really are.” Franco Lolli is a Colombian filmmaker known for his intimate and emotionally charged storytelling. Trained at La Fémis in Paris, Lolli emerged as a prominent voice in contemporary Latin American cinema with his short Rodri (2012), selected at Cannes' Directors’ Fortnight. He gained broader recognition with Gente de Bien (2014), his debut feature, which explores class tensions in Bogotá through the lens of a child’s relationship with his father and their wealthy employer. His second feature, Litigante (2019), opened Critics’ Week at Cannes and portrays the personal and professional conflicts of a single mother and public official, played by Lolli’s real-life mother, Carolina Sanín. In addition to directing, Lolli is also a producer and founder of Evidencia Films, through which he supports new Colombian voices and contributes to strengthening national cinema. His approach—often autobiographical, emotionally raw, and socially conscious—marks his work with a distinct personal perspective. Known for working with non-professional actors and blending fiction with reality, his films have received recognition at festivals such as Cannes, San Sebastián, Lima, and Havana.
