Biography

Mastodon formed in Atlanta, Georgia in the late 90's by the fusion of two errant duos. Guitarist\vocalist Brent Hinds and bassist\vocalist Troy Sanders one one side, and drummer [Brann Dailor] and guitarist Bill Kelliher (former members of Lethargy and Today Is The Day) on the other. Mastodon recorded one demo only (know as Mastodon 7") before enlisting with metal label Relapse records. They recorded three full lenght albums for Relapse: "Remission" (2002), which features on its cover artist Paul Romano's interpretation of a dream Brann once had, a burning horse); "Leviathan" (2004), a concept album with central theme Melville's "Moby Dick" (Brann Dailor read the book during a flight and had the idea of using that theme for a concept album); "Blood Mountain" (2006), which features the song "Colony of Birchmen", recently nominated for a Grammy Award as "Best Metal Performance of the year" (2006).
