Dev Patel

Biography

Dev Patel was born in London's Harrow district to Anita, a caregiver, and Raj, who works in IT; hailing from Nairobi, Kenya, they are both of Gujarati-Indian descent. Patel secured his first professional acting gig playing Anwar on the cult hit television series Skins (2007), where he starred for two seasons. His mainstream breakout came soon thereafter, when he was cast as Jamal in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire (2008), for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Actor. Subsequent film projects have included The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), Chappie (2015), Hotel Mumbai (2018), and The Green Knight (2021). For his portrayal of real-life Australian businessman Saroo Brierley in Lion (2016), where he co-starred with Nicole Kidman, Patel received glowing reviews and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His directorial debut was the critically lauded Monkey Man (2024), in which he also starred.

Monkey Man: The Beast Awakens

Monkey Man A science fiction film that, while it doesn't exactly revive the genre itself, has already been done by our acclaimed John Wick. It is a fairly interesting action film, but when I saw the poster, it didn't convince me. I'll be very honest, I put it to bed, and I couldn't because it really is a great film that you shouldn't miss. And because this film brings a different and extravagant a
marvelousmars: I watched this movie last year and I LOVED it, though I don't think it's sci-fi? I guess you meant action. Anyway, you're totally right about the fight scenes, I don't even like action but they were so fun to watch. The only thing I wish it had done better would be to make the Indian cultural elements more easily understood by foreign audiences, but still, I enjoyed it nonetheless.

"Monkey Man": Dev Patel Unleashes a Visceral and Electrifying Revenge Thriller

Dev Patel, known for his roles in acclaimed dramas such as “Slumdog Millionaire” and “Lion,” takes a bold and electrifying turn with “Monkey Man,” his directorial and starring debut. This film is not only a visceral action thriller, but also a biting social commentary, wrapped in a relentless revenge narrative. The story introduces us to an unnamed protagonist, simply known as “Kid” (Patel), a you

Monkey Man: A reason to kill (or to die for)

If anyone ever referred to this film as "the Indian version of John Wick", they couldn’t have been more wrong. As much as I love the Keanu Reeves-led saga, discovering Monkey Man was an experience that hit on an entirely different level. This is a film with far more layers of complexity, infused with the unique touch that only a visionary like Dev Patel could bring. Though it didn’t receive as muc

Dev Patel's Monkey Man is a Bloody Lecture

Monkey Man is like a sociology lecture at the Grand Guignol. It has a lot to say, but something must suffer if a movie is trying to both educate and show bloody action. You cannot be both Die Hard and Schindler’s List. As such, Monkey Man is an action movie with better comparable movies and a social-commentary movie that confuses rather than clarifies. Dev Patel directed, produced, co-wrote and st
Ishika Banerjee: Very true! as someone from india the class divide shown in the film was very surface level an sub-par, it didnt really touch on the more nuanced aspects of the larger movement that corruption can cause in certain population. Not to mention how weak and useless the female "lead" was. Still happy to see that this movie exists and Patel is thriving to make more.

Dev Patel Returns to His Indian Roots with His Directorial Debut "Monkey Man"

Dev Patel may not be a household name for everyone, but his face is certainly familiar. In 2008, he starred in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning film "Slumdog Millionaire" as a young man coming of age and striving for a better life. His natural performance was deeply memorable, and landing the lead role in his first film, which garnered global recognition and numerous awards, was no easy feat. Sixteen y

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar : 38 mins by Wes Anderson is just perfect

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is comfort for those who feel disappointed after watching Asteriod City. In my previous film review, I expressed my thoughts on watching Asteriod City: it has the visual style of Wes Anderson but lacks in storytelling, giving more of a dream-like experience. This film has also let down some Wes Anderson fans, including myself, who found it to be visually stunning
