Biography

A third round draft choice by Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1978, a draft pick acquired a year prior in trade with Houston Oilers that sent the third round pick and Tight End Jimmie Giles to Tampa Bay. Played both football and baseball as a youth. First black quarterback to lead his team to the NFC championship, where the Bucs lost to the Rams 9-0 in the first and only NFC championship game not the feature a touchdown. Sat out 1983 season in a contract dispute, and signed with the Oklahoma Outlaws of the upstart USFL that year. Played with Outlaws when the merged with the Arizona Wranglers the next year. Returned to the NFL when he signed with the Washington Redskins. He was signed to provide a veteran back-up to quarterback Jay Schroader when Jimmy Hart retired. Took over for Schraoder during strike year of 1987, and led the Redskins to the Super Bowl.
