Biography

"I find the education I got from living in Derby and being streetwise and knowing the people that I know, the lessons that I had to learn growing up, have set me in good stead for this kind of working life." Known for his intense and physically grounded performances, Jack O’Connell emerged from British television with early roles in "The Bill and Skins" (2007–2010), where his portrayal of troubled teen Cook gained significant attention. A native of Derby, England, with working-class roots, O’Connell trained at the Television Workshop in Nottingham, a hub for regional talent. His transition to film includes "Eden Lake" (2008), "Tower Block" (2012), and "Starred Up" (2013), where he played a violent young offender with raw vulnerability. His breakout came with "’71" (2014), as a British soldier stranded in Belfast, and "Unbroken" (2014), directed by Angelina Jolie, where he portrayed Olympic athlete and POW Louis Zamperini. O'Connell has since taken on complex figures in "Money Monster" (2016), "Trial by Fire" (2018), "Seberg" (2019), and "Sinners" (2025). On television, he played the lead in "Godless" (2017) and starred as Happy Valley gangster Jimmy Keene in "Black Bird" (2022). He often embodies volatile, morally ambiguous men shaped by trauma or social neglect. Nominated for a BAFTA Rising Star in 2015, O’Connell also received the Best Actor award at the 2013 British Independent Film Awards for Starred Up.
