Biography

Laffit Pincay Jr. retired in April 2003 as horse racing's all-time winningest jockey until that time, with 9,530 victories. He was surpassed in 2006 by Russell Baze, who as of March 2014 has over 12,208 wins. With his 8,834th win at Hollywood Park in California on December 10, 1999, he surpassed jockey legend Willie Shoemaker (popularly known as Bill Shoemaker or "The Shoe"), thereby setting (at that time) a new career jockey victory record, while on board "Irish Nip," the horse that won him his record 8,834th riding win. Winner of the 1984 Kentucky Derby aboard "Swale" and also the winner of three consecutive Belmont Stakes, 1982, 1983, and 1984. The 1984 Belmont race was also aboard "Swale," making them winners of two out of three legs of the 1984 Triple Crown, missing only The Preakness Stakes at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Track. He never won The Preakness, and after 1984, he never rode another horse to victory in any Triple Crown race, capping his Triple Crown record at four wins.
