Mike Flanagan

Biography

Mike Flanagan was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1978 to Timothy and Laura Flanagan. The family relocated frequently, as Timothy was in the U.S. Coast Guard, and finally settled in Bowie, Maryland. As a child, he would shoot and edit short movies on VHS. This continued as he attended Archbishop Spalding High School in Severn, Maryland, (Class of 1996) where he was active in the school's drama department and the president of the school's SGA. He also anchored the school's morning television show, and produced commercials and short videos for the students. A graduate of Towson University's Electronic Media and Film department, he began his feature film career in 2000 with "Makebelieve" at the age of 21. His follow up, "Still Life" (2001) was an award winning digital feature shot in and around Baltimore. Flanagan then produced television programming for Discovery and ESPN in 2002, and in 2003 wrote and directed the award-winning feature film "Ghosts of Hamilton Street". Later that year, Mike was the Director of Photography for the cult hit "Chainsaw Sally" by Writer/Director Jimmy O Burril. Mike moved from Baltimore to Los Angeles the day after "Chainsaw Sally" wrapped, and almost immediately found work directing & editing "The Gleib Show" for National Lampoon Networks and several reality television programs, as well as regional commercials. In 2005, Flanagan turned to the horror genre for the first time with "Oculus", an applauded short film that is just the beginning of an ambitious horror anthology, which eventually became the inspiration for his 2013 feature film of the same name. In 2010, after raising funds on Kickstarter, he wrote and directed the applauded indie horror film "Absentia," which he credits with establishing his career. "Absentia," shot for 70k in Flanagan's apartment, led to "Oculus" (2014) and "Before I Wake" (2015). Flanagan's critically acclaimed "Hush" (2016) was released exclusively on Netflix, which led to the online streaming service producing Flanagan's adaptation of Stephen King's "Gerald's Game" (2017). He is married to actress Kate Siegel, and they have two children, Cody Paul Flanagan (born November 26, 2016) and Theodora Isabelle Irene Flanagan (born December 3, 2018). His oldest son, Rigby Flanagan-Bell (born October 15, 2010) is from his relationship with "Absentia" actress Courtney Bell.

A God Dies in Reverse: How Marty Anderson Taught the Apocalypse and Stole The Life of Chuck

Some characters steal scenes. Marty Anderson stole the entire cosmos. You walk into The Life of Chuck expecting Tom Hiddleston. The trailers promised charm, dance, and emotional poignancy dressed in quirky trailer polish. Instead, the world ends with a monologue. A classroom. A chalkboard. A teacher. And Chiwetel Ejiofor, in one of the most disarmingly harrowing performances of the year, detonates

The Life of a Materialist Dragon

A few weeks ago, I wrote about my double feature experience with Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch. The films had attempted, half-heartedly, to be the next Barbenheimer, but they simply weren't. Still, my day at the cinema reminded me of how much I enjoy a double feature. So with the current onslaught of summer movies, I decided to attempt something even more ambitious: a

Bring Her Back is the New Benchmark for Elevated Horror

Bring Her Back is my first 5/5 of 2025, and it’s in contention for perhaps my favourite horror film of the decade thus far. I’m going to try to write this piece while divulging as little information about the plot as possible, because I believe this is something worth going into as blind as possible. All you need to know is that two step-siblings — older-brother Andy (Billy Barratt) and partially-

Lucas.: That's high praise... But I gotta be honest, I still don't really want to see this. It just doesn't look like my bag. However, I'm glad it worked so well for you

The Religious Violence and Populist Frenzy in "Midnight Mass"

What if the angels in the Bible were bloodthirsty monsters lurking in the darkness, and miracles were merely offerings from Satan? How do we then reconstruct the essence of faith? Director Mike Flanagan explores this complex relationship between humanity and religion in "Midnight Mass" (2021). "Midnight Mass" transports viewers to the isolated, desolate town of Crockett Island. Once thriving due t

"Black Adam": The "Shattered Dimension" of Superhero Films

"In the post-COVID era, a hundred types of horror have bloomed." While the primary aim of the horror genre is to provide sensory stimulation and relief, its role as a significant part of speculative fiction means it often has a pronounced social aspect due to its intangible and timely content. For example, both Wolfgang Petersen's "Outbreak" (1995) and Steven Soderbergh's "Contagion" (2011) depict
