Biography

“I realized that the things that made me different were the things that made me powerful.” Born in Los Angeles to Honduran parents, she began acting at a young age and later studied theater and international relations at the University of Southern California. Ferrera gained recognition with her debut in Real Women Have Curves (2002), a coming-of-age film that challenged beauty standards and immigrant narratives in mainstream cinema. She achieved mainstream success with Ugly Betty (2006–2010), portraying Betty Suarez, a smart, ambitious young woman navigating the fashion world. The role earned her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, making her the first Latina woman to win an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. Her film work includes The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005, 2008), How to Train Your Dragon (2010–2019, voice role), End of Watch (2012), Cesar Chavez (2014), and Barbie (2023), where her monologue on gender roles received widespread cultural attention. Beyond acting, she is an outspoken advocate for Latinx visibility, gender equity, and voter engagement.
