Hwang Jung-min

Biography

Hwang Jung-Min is one of the highest-grossing movie stars in South Korea, starring in many iconic box office hits such as ODE TO MY FATHER (2014), VETERAN (2015), THE WAILING (2016) to name a few, and is the third actor in Korea to become a member of the "100 million Viewer Club" in Korea, along with Song Kang-ho from PARASITE. Hwang started his career in musical theatre, making his acting debut in LINE 1 in 1995. In 2001, Hwang landed his first acting role in a feature film after successfully auditioning for the role of Kang-su in WAIKIKI BROTHERS. Since that time Hwang has frequently displayed his level of depth as an actor by performing in a wide range of roles: a scene-stealing mob boss in NEW WORLD, where his performance was singled out by The New York Times, an ordinary hardworking man in ODE TO MY FATHER ( the second highest-grossing film in Korean cinema history), and an unforgettable performance as a shaman in THE WAILING, a globally acclaimed horror film.

Long Time No Sex: The East Asia Treat of Bonnie & Clyde

Bonnie & Clyde Hello Peliplaters! When I studied film in the US, Bonnie & Clyde was the first movie I analyzed. As a student aspiring to be a director, I discovered many elements of the "Hollywood success formula" in this film. Though set in America, its thrilling sequences of armed bank robberies, police confrontations, and car chases resonate with audiences worldwide. That’s why Bonnie & Clyde immediately came to mind when I saw the title of this month’s writing challenge Outlaw Couple, but fo

From Mob Leader to Korean President: Jung-min Hwang's Portrayal of Good & Evil

Hwang Jung-min as Chun Doo-hwan in The Seoul Spring, aka 12·12: The Day (2024). Hello, Peliplaters! In Western culture, organized crime is often synonymous with the Italian Mafia, particularly as depicted in The Godfather (1972). Deliberately speaking thoughts grounded in principles, Marlon Brando's portrayal of mafia boss Vito Corleone embodies aristocratic grace. The Godfather has profoundly shaped Western cinema, leaving traces of Vito Corleone visible in countless mafia boss characters—until

I, The Executioner Review - South Korean Cop Movie is a Total Blast #TIFF2024

I knew I was going to like I, the Executioner right away. Opening on the police raiding an illegal card game, the film announces itself quickly. Set to Yes Sir, I Can Boogie, this opening sequence bursts with energy and wit - I said “woah” out loud at a crane shot that moves from the card game to cops swarming the street below. This scene, to quote SNL’s Stefon, has everything: fart jokes, split diopters, parkour, nut shots. It’s dizzying, but I had a huge smile on my face the entire time. I, th

Too Many Ways to Be No. 1

"New World" is often regarded as a natural extension of the undercover theme seen in "Infernal Affairs," drawing frequent comparisons to "The Departed" series. Despite these high-quality predecessors, the Korean film industry has once again shown its innovative spirit. "New World" delves into the perilous world of undercover agents, adding a layer of complexity by exploring the identity crises faced by its characters, particularly within the backdrop of internal gang rivalries for control.
