Michael Fassbender

Biography

Michael Fassbender is an Irish actor who was born in Heidelberg, Germany, to a German father, Josef, and an Irish mother, Adele (originally from Larne, County Antrim, in Northern Ireland). Michael was raised in the town of Killarney, Co. Kerry, in south-west Ireland, where his family moved to when he was two years old. His parents ran a restaurant (his father is a chef). Fassbender is based in London, England, and became known in the U.S. after his role in the Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds (2009). In 2011, Fassbender debuted as the Marvel antihero Magneto in the prequel X-Men: First Class (2011); he would go on to share the role with Ian McKellen in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). Also in 2011, Fassbender's performance as a sex addict in Shame (2011) received critical acclaim. He won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards. In 2013, his role as slave owner Edwin Epps in slavery epic 12 Years a Slave (2013) was similarly praised, earning him his first Oscar nomination, for Best Supporting Actor. 12 Years a Slave marked Fassbender's third collaboration with Steve McQueen, who also directed Hunger and Shame. In 2013, Fassbender appeared in another Ridley Scott film, The Counselor (2013). In 2015, he portrayed Steve Jobs (2015) in the Danny Boyle-directed biopic of the same name, and played Macbeth (2015) in Justin Kurzel's adaptation of William Shakespeare's play. For the former, he has received Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and SAG nominations for Best Actor. As well as acting, Fassbender produced the 2015 western Slow West (2015), which he also starred in.

Dear Ridley Scott, Stop Pissing Me Off

If you Google "greatest filmmakers of all time," chances are you won't have to look for long before you see Ridley Scott's name. He is one of the highest-grossing filmmakers in history, has been nominated for multiple Oscars... Oh, and he's a Knight. Yet, I can't remember the last time I went to the theatre to see a Ridley Scott picture and actually enjoyed myself. More often than not, I leave pissed off. Scott hasn't made any movies of note since The Martian in 2015, and he hasn't made anything

Lucas.: A lot of fair points here. You're wrong about American Gangster, but thats ok. I actually am not a big fan of his "classics" like Gladiator 1 or Blade Runner -- however Thelma is goated. As for his work in the past few years... it leaves a lot to be desired. Someone needed to call him out

25 reasons to love Zack Snyder's 300

What's a guilty pleasure? Who determines what's good or bad? Personally, I don't let myself get carried away by others' opinions. I experienced it recently with Anora, Sean Baker's new movie everyone around the world is praising. As a fan of his cinema, I could have easily gotten carried away by everyone, but I simply didn't connect with it. I'm not that kind of fan who glorifies with anticipation. So, who am I to determine what's good or bad in cinema? Maybe it sounds better to say "I didn't li

BLACK BAG: Espionage and Marriage Are the Same Thing

Times have changed. Watching how the Brangelina duo exchange empty looks while bullets fly through their refined home isn't sexy anymore, I would even say it isn't even entertaining. People don't enjoy those delightful scenes of mediatic stupidity anymore and now follow intelligence… but not the artificial kind, that's a topic for another debate. Maybe I have to talk solely for myself and not lump everyone together, but I'm basing myself on a hunch when I say that some filmmakers stopped underes

Ridley Scott Could Turn One Hundred Years of Solitude into a Sci-Fi Movie

Márquez's masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude is a great sci-fi fable in my opinion. There are many stunning scene descriptions in the book that, if adapted to the big screen using IMAX imaging technology, will definitely become an awe-inspiring visual spectacle praised by global audiences. It could even surpass the just-released Dune: Part Two. At the end of the book, an unprecedented windstorm swept through the small town of Macondo, and the entire town and its residents were swept away

From the Vault Review: 'Alien: Romulus'

Author's note: This is a throwback review and I've watched this film several times since I wrote this initially. After many years of no films in the Alien franchise and what folks considered to be a letdown with Alien: Covenant, a return to form was necessary. Rather than shuffle ahead into the future, we’re sent back to a timeline between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) with Alien: Romulus. Thanks to Fede Alvarez and his vision, the film pays homage and injects new life into a beloved franchise.

My Life After Black Bag

London, 11:55 p.m., April 10, 2025. I've just walked out of Black Bag and my personality is changed forever. This sleek, sexy, spy thriller about a husband who has to spy on his wife while still finding time to host dinner parties and fish has inspired me. No longer will I dress like a dud. No longer will I act like a goofball. From now on, I will only dress as sharp as British intelligence agent George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), if not sharper. I will trust nobody and investigate everybody

Watching Kneecap on St. Patrick's Day

Monday was Saint Patrick's Day. Despite my tendency to embrace certain levels of hedonism, I do have a rule that I try to stick to: Don't go to work hungover. Since Saint Pat's was on a weeknight, I didn't plan to get drunk. Instead, I went to the movies. The Hollywood Theatre is an independent cinema on the west side of the city. It was screening Kneecap, an Irish movie that I'd been waiting to watch for over a year. It made waves at Sundance 2024, winning the NEXT Audience Award. Since I'd fir
