Pablo Stoll

Biography

"I think it's good to stay true to a project and not change the script every time you fall out of love with an idea." Pablo Stoll is a Uruguayan filmmaker and one of the most influential figures in his country’s cinema. Drawn to visual storytelling from a young age, he started by making comics and taking video courses before studying social communication at the Universidad Católica del Uruguay. There, he met Juan Pablo Rebella, with whom he collaborated on short films such as Buenos y santos and Víctor y los elegidos. Alongside Rebella and producer Fernando Epstein, he co-founded the production company Ctrl Z and, in 2001, released his debut feature, 25 Watts. Three years later, the same team premiered Whisky (2004), both films earning international acclaim. After Rebella's passing in 2006, Stoll continued his solo career, working on projects like the comedy show Los informantes and directing films such as Hiroshima (2009) and 3 (2012), the latter based on a project he had developed with his longtime collaborator. In 2024, he released El tema del verano. Beyond filmmaking, Stoll has directed music videos, documentary programs, and taught Film Production in the Audiovisual Media program at the Instituto Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes, which is part of the Universidad de la República.
