Biography

Anthony Slide has been described as "a one-man publishing phenomenon" by the Los Angeles Times and a "meticulous film scholar" by Daily Variety. He has authored more than seventy books on the history of popular entertainment and edited a further 150 volumes. Among his pioneering works are books on early American cinema, early women directors, the cinema and Ireland, a history of the Vitagraph Company of America, a history of the non-theatrical film, and many others. Aside from his work as a writer and historian, he has found time to direct a number of documentaries relating to silent film history, including the feature-length The Silent Feminists, work as a consultant on a variety of film and television projects, and record a number of DVD commentaries. In 1990, in recognition of his work on the history of popular entertainment, Anthony Slide was awarded a honorary doctorate of letters by Bowling Green University.
