Biography

“I love playing characters that are very different from myself. I feel that’s where I get the most satisfaction as an actor, because I’m always trying to challenge myself and push myself out of my comfort zone.” Jeremy Renner first pursued studies in computer science and criminology at Modesto Junior College before transitioning to acting and studying at the American Conservatory Theater. His acting career began with theater and small roles in film and television. He gained recognition with a standout performance as the serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer in a crime biopic. His role in The Hurt Locker brought him significant acclaim, earning an Academy Award nomination and leading to his appointment as a United Nations Goodwill Peace Ambassador for mine-clearing efforts. Renner is also well-known for his work in action films and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly for his portrayal of Hawkeye. His involvement in major franchises such as Mission: Impossible and The Bourne Legacy further solidified his status as a leading actor. Beyond acting, Renner is a singer-songwriter with two rock music albums to his credit. In 2023, he premiered Rennervations, a reality TV series focused on renovating decommissioned vehicles for community use.

Zombie Cinema Isn't Dead, but Cinema Etiquette Might Be

There’s something deeply ironic about watching a movie like 28 Years Later — a movie about the decayed remnants of civil society and the long-term effects of post-apocalyptic upbringing — surrounded by people who behave like they were raised in a bunker by an iPad and a sack of Hi-chew. And look, I’m not some purist who thinks movie theaters need to be as silent as a confessional — I love a rowdy audience when it’s earned. The right crowd can turn a good movie into a spiritual experience. I’m ta

Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters. The eccentric retelling of the classic tale is the best guilty pleasure of the 2010s

There is always a movie that we can't deny is terrible, that lacks brilliant performances, that has implausible and ridiculous situations but somehow conquers our hearts. For most fans Resident Evil is an excellent saga, for others it's not that great but they love the story and the characters, and for others it's a waste of a Sunday afternoon. There are films that have a worse reputation like Fast & Furious but still their fans, who even know that it is full of nonsense and ridiculousness, know

Arrival: No, Alien Language Can’t Do That

When Arrival first premiered, I was beyond excited - I was in my first year of university, just starting my linguistics degree, so the timing couldn’t have been better. The department organised a trip for all of us to go to the theatre to see a rare depiction of a linguist on screen, and as we went, we all carried some hope that people would finally stop asking us “Oh, so you study languages?” every time we introduced ourselves. Spoiler alert: No, this is not a linguist. This hope of recognition

Mayor of Kingstown: We Have No Freedom Even Outside the Prison

After releasing its second season, Jeremy Renner's performance as the lead actor has made audiences more interested in the American TV series Mayor of Kingstown. More and more people are looking forward to the final season to see what will happen to "Mr. Mayor". In recent years, American TV dramas have surpassed movies in depicting real-life situations. Some even believe that TVs have replaced contemporary American literature as a new form of expression, at least judging by the quality of Mayor
