Biography

William Sandell was born on 9 August 1950 and grew up in Los Angeles. He first entered films as a set dresser and assistant art director with exploitation films like 'Invasion of the Bee Girls' and 'Zombie Prom', receiving his first credit as a production designer with 'The Promise' in 1979. Since then he has worked with the likes of Wolfgang Petersen on 'Airforce One' and 'The Perfect Storm' and created the town of Bedrock for 'The Flintstones' - an under-rated contribution - and gained a BAFTA and an Oscar nod for his detailed recreation of life on board a nineteenth century ship in 'Master and Commander - the Far Side of the World' as well as providing a brace of futuristic worlds for Paul Verhoeven in 'Total Recall' and 'Robo-Cop'. Away from the film set he is an avid collector of comic books with a collection in excess of eight thousand.
