Fernando Meirelles is a Brazilian film director and producer. As one of the directors of City of God (2002), he approached the life of the favelas of Rio de Janeiro between the 60s and 80s, being nominated for an Oscar as Best Director for this film.
Meirelles began studying Architecture & Urbanism at the University of São Paulo, and during this period, he started his film career making amateur films. In 1992, he founded the production company O2 Filmes to advertise, since at that time there was no strong film industry in Brazil, but thanks to films like his, the country gained visibility on the world entertainment map.
Meirelles made his film debut with The Nutty Boy 2 (1998), and two years later, he directed an episode of Brava Gente (2000), serving as a rehearsal for City of God. Throughout his career, he directed films such as The Constant Gardener (2005), Blindness (2008), and The Two Popes (2019), with Anthony Hopkins and Jonathan Pryce. Meirelles also directed and produced the HBO original series Joint Venture (2019).
