Biography

Herman J. Mankiewicz was an American screenwriter and journalist who co-wrote Citizen Kane (1941) with Orson Welles. Son of German-Jewish immigrants, he studied philosophy at Columbia and worked as a journalist and drama critic before moving to Hollywood, where he became Paramount’s head of the screenwriting department. He contributed to the Marx Brothers’ comedies and worked with his brother Joseph L. Mankiewicz. He won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Citizen Kane (1942) and received a nomination for The Pride of the Yankees (1943). He died in Hollywood on March 5, 1953, at age 55.
