Anna Magnani

Biography

“Please don't retouch my wrinkles. It took me so long to earn them”. Anna Magnani was an Italian actress known for her powerful portrayals of working-class women during the height of Italian Neorealism. Raised in poverty by her maternal grandparents, she briefly studied at the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome while working as a nightclub singer. She made her film debut in the late 1920s with an uncredited role in a silent film, but after World War II, her acting talent found a defining outlet in Rome, Open City (1945), directed by Roberto Rossellini and considered a foundational work of Neorealism. In the following years, she collaborated with prominent European filmmakers: she starred in Bellissima (1951) by Luchino Visconti, Le Carrosse d’Or (1953) by Jean Renoir, and Mamma Roma (1962) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini. Her first role in an American production was The Rose Tattoo (1955), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe. Over her career, she received three additional Oscar nominations. A key figure in cinema, Magnani is remembered for her authenticity and deep commitment to her characters.
