Alejandro G. Iñárritu

“My cinema is an extension of myself. A sort of vital testimony of my life experience, with my few virtues and my many limitations.” Alejandro Iñárritu is a Mexican filmmaker, screenwriter and producer, very influential in postmodern cinema. He is known for his distinctive style that delves into themes such as the human condition, death, identity; and often does so through parallel stories that, although seemingly independent, are interconnected. In his youth, he traveled in search of experiences, returned to Mexico, and entered university to study Communication. Two years later, he abandoned his studies to dedicate himself fully to voice-over, and began his career working at WFM radio, which led him to success. In the 90's, after composing music for some Mexican films, he created the production company Z Films with the objective of writing, producing and directing. In 1995, he wrote and directed his first TV pilot, Detrás del dinero, and, years later, he made his film debut with Amores Perros (1999), the first of the Trilogy of Death, along with 21 Grams (2003) and Babel (2006). His filmmaking style is characterized by non-linear narratives, an intense use of the handheld camera, and a strong attention to visual and sound details. In 2010, he directed Biutiful, but it was with Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014) that he achieved the greatest international recognition, winning four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. The following year, he again won the Oscar for Best Director for The Revenant (2015), becoming one of the few filmmakers to win two years in a row. His contribution to cinema and art in general has established him as one of today's most respected creators.
