Biography

Jazz bassist and recording artist, educated on piano, bass and brass instruments in Kenosha, and later (1948-1949) in general music courses at the Chicago Musical College. He doubled on trombone and bass in his first jobs, and worked with Bud Freeman and Bill Russo in Chicago combos during 1950, then went on the road with Tex Beneke between 1951 and 1954. After moving to Los Angeles, he worked in groups with Bob Brookmeyer and Kenny Drew during 1954, then traveled over the next two years with the Les Brown orchestra. Also in 1956, he appeared in night club groups with Peggy Lee and Red Norvo, and with the Dave Pell group in 1957, finally working freelance by 1958. He played at the September, 1958 Monterey Jazz Festival with Med Flory, and worked with Jimmy Giuffre during 1959, including his European tour. He made a number of recordings, including LPs with Gerry Mulligan, Johnny Hodges, Bill Holman, Peggy Lee, Bob Brookmeyer, Konitz-Giuffre, Mel Lewis, and Marty Paich.
