Biography

John Davey originally lived, went to school, and studied photography in Cardiff, South Wales. He relocated to London in the late 60's where he trained with the NCB (National Coal Board) film unit. Joined the film union, ACTT, then freelanced for various film and TV companies and NGO's as a cinematographer. He connected with veteran American director Frederic Wiseman in 1978, when Wiseman's DP for the previous ten years, Bill Brayne, a friend and colleague at AKA's (Alan King Associates), decided to give up cinematography. He has continued to shoot for Wiseman since that date, now in excess of 30 films. On average Wiseman makes a feature length documentary every 12/15 months. In an interview he mentioned that usually only about 3% of the footage he shoots actually lands up in the finished film. Davey also shoots music promos, commercials and drama for TV and theatrical distribution.
