Biography

"Theater and education must go hand in hand; educating is not just about teaching how to read and write, but also about learning to think and feel the world in different ways." Fernanda Montenegro is a theater, film, and television actress, and one of the most respected in Brazil. She began her artistic career in theater with the play Alegres Canções nas Montanhas in 1950, where she met Fernando Torres, who would soon become her husband. Together, they founded the company Teatro dos Sete. She made her film debut with A Falecida (1964) by Nelson Rodrigues, but her film career took off with O Que É Isso, Companheiro? (1997). Throughout her career, she has worked in films such as O Auto da Compadecida (2000), Casa de Areia (2005), alongside her daughter Fernanda Torres, Infância (2014), and Piedade (2019). It was her role in Central do Brasil (1998) that made her internationally known, making her the first Brazilian woman nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress. In 2024, she appeared in Ainda Estou Aqui, directed by Walter Salles, which won the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film. After decades of work, her legacy remains a reference in Latin American cinema.
