Biography

"I'm drawn to emotionally damaged characters because there's more to uncover." Helena Bonham Carter is a British actress known for her distinctive aesthetic and a versatile career in film and television. Without formal acting training, she made her screen debut at age 16 in A Pattern of Roses (1983) and gained early recognition with A Room with a View (1985). Throughout her filmography, she has balanced period dramas such as Howards End (1992) and The Wings of the Dove (1997)—for which she received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for Best Actress—with mainstream productions like Fight Club (1999), Big Fish (2003), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), and the Harry Potter series, where she played the volatile Bellatrix Lestrange. A large part of her filmography includes multiple collaborations with Tim Burton, with whom she had a relationship for over a decade. In 2010, she received another Oscar nomination for her role in The King’s Speech, and in 2013 she won an International Emmy for Burton and Taylor. She has also received multiple BAFTA nominations throughout her career. Bonham Carter has established herself as one of the most distinctive and respected British actresses of her generation.
