Biography

“You've got to take who you are and love who you are and do the best you can with what you've got. It goes for the figure, and it goes for everything else.” Mexican actress of Lebanese and Spanish descent. From an early age she showed interest in the dramatic arts, so her parents sent her to study acting in New Orleans. When she finished school, she enrolled at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico and began working in soap operas. After gaining recognition in her home country, she decided to move to Los Angeles in search of more demanding film roles, enrolling in classes with Stella Adler. Her big break came with Robert Rodriguez's Desperado, who would later choose her again and position her as an icon of his cinema and of the time. In 2000 she played Frida Kahlo in his biopic and obtained her first Oscar nomination, becoming the first Mexican woman to enter the category. In addition, she has also developed as a producer of several projects in which she has worked and as the director of a children's program.

The Honeymoon Killers, 1970, the real folie a deux

At first sight one might assume that The Honeymoon Killers (1970) is just another exploitation film. After all, its poster looks cheap and provocative: an obese woman, in her underwear, receives the passionate caresses of her lover... all done with a black and white photograph, and a two-color background (white and pink). It looks like a story of fetishism and forbidden passions... until we see th

When the Spin-off Surpasses

Spin-offs don’t usually get a lot of love. They’re often the weaker offshoots of a great franchise, a little like sequels’ less ambitious cousins. But every once in a while, one comes along that proves it can stand tall—and in the case of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022), even surpass the original. Eleven years after his first solo adventure, everyone’s favorite feline outlaw is back, and hones

Frida | She was as hard as steel, yet as fine as butterfly's wing

If I hadn't watched the movie Frida, I might never have imagined that a woman could endure the pain of fate with such passion. In the past, I used to believe that if a woman became disabled, the best outcome would be like that of Helen Keller, who wrote "The Story of My Life" and became an inspiring author through her unparalleled willpower. I thought such women would be strong and courageous, but
