Biography

Guy Edward Pearce was born October 5, 1967 in Cambridgeshire, England, UK to Margaret Anne and Stuart Graham Pearce. His father was born in Auckland, New Zealand, to English and Scottish parents, while Guy's mother is English. Pearce and his family initially traveled to Australia for two years, after his father was offered the position of Chief test pilot for the Australian Government. Guy was just 3-years-old. After deciding to stay in Australia and settling in the Victorian city of Geelong, Guy's father was killed 5 years later in an aircraft test flight, leaving Guy's mother, a schoolteacher, to care for him and his older sister, Tracy. Having little interest in subjects at school like math or science, Guy favored art, drama and music. He joined local theatre groups at a young age and appeared in such productions as "The King and I," "Fiddler on the Roof," and "The Wizard of Oz." In 1985, just two days after his final high school exam, Guy started a four-year stint as "Mike Young" on the popular Aussie soap Neighbours (1985). At age 20, Guy appeared in his first film, Heaven Tonight (1989), then, after a string of appearances in film, television and on the stage, he won the role of an outrageous drag queen in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). Most recently, he has amazed film critics and audiences, alike, with his magnificent performances in L.A. Confidential (1997), Memento (2000), The Proposition (2005), Factory Girl (2006), The Hurt Locker (2008), The King's Speech (2010) and the HBO mini-series, Mildred Pierce (2011). Next to acting, Guy has had a life-long passion for music and songwriting. Guy likes to keep his private life very private. He lives in Melbourne, Australia, which is also where he married his childhood sweetheart, Kate Mestitz in March 1997.

Memento – The Movie I Hate to Love and Love to Hate

There are movies that leave you speechless, and others that just leave you cold. Memento? That one does both, at the same damn time. I honestly don’t even know how to explain what this film does to me without sounding a little crazy, because here’s the truth: it frustrates me, it bores me, it makes me want to throw something at the screen... and yet I can’t stop thinking about it. It's like that weird song you swear you hate, but you catch yourself humming it in the shower. That’s when you reali

The Shrouds of Cronenberg's Canada

Canadian identity is membranous. Our stereotype is one of moose-riding, hockey-playing, syrup-loving lumberjacks, although I have yet to meet someone who meets all of these criteria. In reality, our quintessential painters, Emily Carr and Maud Lewis and the Group of Seven, fixate on nature, and I agree that Canadians have a whole-hearted relationship with the land. In our literature, Margaret Atwood's Surfacing focuses on our relationship with nature, but it also contemplates the finitism of our

gigi is punk: Great article! I already added The Shrouds to my watchlist. Speaking of Canadian directors, my favorite director of all time is Xavier Dolan! If you're not familiar with his filmography, I would totally recommend it! He's a genius and his movies are real pieces of art. One of his movies, "It's Only the End of the World" is also starred by Vincent Casssel!

Brutally Bloated, Brutally Pretentious, Brutally Empty

I have always been somewhat wary of the word "epic," especially when it is used to describe a film. More often than not, "epic" is synonymous with "ambition," and "ambition" is often indistinguishable from "self-importance." We live in an era overflowing with ambition, and the last thing moviegoers want to experience is escaping reality only to find themselves once again surrounded by boundless ambition and self-importance in the movie theater. But such things are inevitable. The film industry i

What is The Brutalist about? Movie explained and other architecture films recos

At the recently concluded 97th Academy Awards, “The Brutalist,” which received 10 nominations, ultimately took home Best Actor thanks to Adrien Brody’s vivid portrayal of Jewish architect László Tóth. The film also indisputably secured two major technical awards—Best Original Score and Best Cinematography—owing to its dynamic camera work, sweeping reverential music, as well as sculptural presentation of architecture. Still of “The Brutalist” Though the story is set almost entirely in Pennsylvani

What should we think of the beef between Guy Pearce and Kevin Spacey?

L.A. Confidential, a classic noir film released nearly thirty years ago—a legend we thought had been cemented in cinematic history—has recently taken an unexpected turn in its afterlife. One of the film’s three leading actors, Guy Pearce, is currently in the spotlight. His performance in The Brutalist has earned this seasoned actor his first-ever Oscar nomination. During an awards-season interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he became visibly emotional when recalling his experience filming L.A.

THE BRUTALIST: Adrien Brody's monumental comeback

For many months, director Brady Corbet's third movie was on everyone's lips, a monumental American epic that many described as "the cinematographic event of the year." Even though I didn't jump on the bandwagon at the time, or rather wasn't on board—as a nod to our protagonist's initial arrival in American lands—the first minutes filled me with enthusiasm in a way I hadn't experienced for a long time. I felt I was witnessing something on the big screen much greater than I had imagined. A perfect

Oscar Nominations Are Here. Someone's Gettin Slapped

Well, after delays due to the L.A. wildfires, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have finally released their nominations for the 97th Academy Awards. I'm more than a little dissatisfied. I'm downright upset. There are some major snubs and I will not stand idly by as the Academy ignores some of the year's best movies. But, I will also say, there are some categories that are super spicy. So, let's get into it. No Challengers!? How dare they. Or, am I crazy for loving that movie as muc

Jenn The Editor: I think Luca Guadagnino must have crossed the academy in a past life. Challengers and Queer have been present at every other award show this season, and not even a crumb here! Feels personal.

None for You, All for Me: The Brutalist and Hollywood's New Iconoclast

There's a new power couple in Hollywood and they demand your attention. Brady Corbet and his common-law partner, Mona Fastvold, created The Brutalist, an Oscar contender that not only took years to create but also pushes the boundaries of the cinematic form. The Brutalist has cemented Corbet as an iconoclast director, akin to egomaniacal geniuses like Frank Capra and John Ford. Through deft creativity, an unbelievably sharp script and a willingness to push the envelope, Corbet and Fastvold have

Alejandro Franco "Arlequin": Awesome review! It is easy to read, deep, informative, entertaining, relaxed and sells the film better than the best publicist at A24! Honestly, it is a film that did not arouse empathy in me simply because of its super long duration... but your analysis invites you to watch it! Maintaining interest for 90% of the time in a 3 and a half hour film is a titanic achievement; that often happens in films less than half the length. Sometimes directors must discover their themes, which is where they shine; but that requires failed attempts until you discover your way. Considering the real-life reference to MichelAngelo, perhaps the work entrusted to Brody is his version of the Sistine Chapel - a monumental work that represents a life's work and the obsession that guides his existence -. Of course, I must see it to express a more accurate and comprehensive opinion, which I hope to do as soon as I have the opportunity.
