Todd Haynes

Biography

Todd Haynes is an American screenwriter and director known for exploring themes of fame, sexuality, and marginalized lives in his films. Notable works include Safe (1995), Velvet Goldmine (1998), Far from Heaven (2002), I’m Not There (2007), Carol (2015), and May December (2023). Haynes graduated from Brown University and gained early recognition with Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987), a postmodern short film about Karen Carpenter’s struggle with anorexia. His first feature, Poison (1991), was controversial for its sexual themes and NEA funding. Safe depicted a suburban woman’s environmental allergies, while Velvet Goldmine examined glam-rock celebrities. Far from Heaven recreated a 1950s melodrama, earning Haynes an Academy Award nomination. He later explored Bob Dylan's life in I’m Not There and created the HBO miniseries Mildred Pierce (2011). His film Carol received critical acclaim for portraying a romantic relationship between two women in the 1950s. Other projects include Wonderstruck (2017), Dark Waters (2019), and The Velvet Underground documentary (2021). His latest film, May December, addresses the Mary Kay Letourneau scandal and sparked discussions on gender, race, and class, despite mixed reactions from those involved. The film received several nominations, including at Cannes and the Golden Globes.

A Complete Unknown: I’ve seen it, and I don’t hate it (and Timmy Chalamet isn’t a bad Dylan)

I’m a big believer in Bob Dylan and an even bigger disbeliever in biopics. So when I heard about the inevitable release of a Dylan biopic helmed by Hollywood journeyman James Mangold, my reaction was anxiety, puzzlement, and rejection—because a genius like Dylan can’t possibly fit into the constraints of a traditional biopic. We already have an excellent non-traditional Dylan biopic: Todd Haynes’

"Double Folly": Will This Be the End of Joaquin Phoenix?

2024 has undoubtedly not been a good year for Joaquin Phoenix. This 2020 Oscar-winner actor is now caught in a double defeat: his new film Joker 2: Folie à Deux has flopped both at the box office and with critics, and his sudden exit from an untitled LGBTQ-themed film with Todd Haynes just five days before shooting has severely tarnished his reputation. Together, these two incidents have cast a hu

Flirting, Frowning and Film

Movies, especially influential ones, often serve to normalize behaviors. When outliers are presented in context and without a rush of judgement, people are made aware of things that would make them think twice. That is also representation, which applies not just to race, but to all things human. I tend to get on the alert whenever I see a woman portrayed as a villain on the big screen - especially
