Biography

She is a professor of film at the University of Reading and an honorary professor of film at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo. She is an internationally recognized expert on world cinema, cinematic realism, and intermediality in cinema, topics she has explored through an innovative approach in several publications, such as her books Realist Cinema as World Cinema: Non-cinema, Intermedial Passages, Total Cinema (2020) and World Cinema and the Ethics of Realism (2011). Among the books she has edited are The Moving Form of Film: Historicising the Medium Through Other Media (2023), in partnership with Stefan Solomon, Towards an Intermedial History of Brazilian Cinema (2022), with Luciana Araújo and Tiago de Luca, and Impure Cinema: Intermedial and Intercultural Approaches to Film (2013), with Anne Jerslev.
