Storyline:  Abe Lucas is a philosophy professor going through a deep existential crisis, depressed and addicted to alcohol. When he joins a university to teach, he develops a relationship with Rita Richards, a professor who is in an unhappy marriage, and Jill Pollard, a student who becomes his friend. Gradually, despite being in love with her boyfriend Roy, Jill finds herself attracted to Abe. With excellent performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone, this is a dark, acidic comedy-drama.
