There are scenes with gang beating, denigration, use of excesive violence from the guardians. There are intense and very real scenes. I consider several scenes are really violent and raw.

One shot lingers on the back of a boy as he hangs from ropes. You can see the skin under the ropes is raw and bleeding, and it is visually implied he has been brutally beaten and tortured.

Several characters are shown smoking cigarettes, including teenage boys. Scenes where boys trade tobacco for other items.

Drug use is depicted briefly when a girl is seen smoking a joint and then passing it to a boy.
