Storyline:  Amid the chaos of the 1999 Chechnya war, nine-year-old Hadji is separated from his siblings after their parents are killed. Believing his sister Raissa dead, he leaves his baby brother in safety and is swept into a wave of refugees crossing into Ingushetia. Silent and traumatized, Hadji finds a protector in Carole, a Frenchwoman documenting the tragedy. Meanwhile, Raissa searches for her brothers, and Kolia, a young Russian soldier forced into the army, witnesses the brutal invasion that tore their family apart.
