Hurricane Katrina made landfall in southeast Louisiana at 6:10 a.m. local time on August 29th 2005 as a large category 3 hurricane with winds reaching up to 125 mph, spawning 62 tornadoes in eight states, making it the most costliest hurricane in U.S. history and the most deadliest hurricane in over 77 years. The storm surge destroyed several levees around New Orleans, eventually prompting more than 50 breeches throughout the city's levees, including the 17th Street Canal levee, the Industrial Canal levee and the London Avenue Canal flood wall. More than 1,600 people lost their lives, and even more remain missing. In many areas, waters reached as high as 20 feet leaving 80% of the city underwater. Destroying nearly 200,000 Gulf Coast homes and leaving over one million people homeless. While many voices were left unheard, some of the most tragic belong to those who could not speak -- the animals. An estimated 600,000 pets were killed or left behind as a result of Katrina. Most helicopter pilots, rescue boat captains, and buses refused to load pets in order to hold more people. Many families who refused to evacuate without their pets, were turned away from hospitals and shelters, even those evacuated from the Superdome for neighboring cities were not allowed to take their pets with them. NOLA 3D tells the story of just one family, the Lovejoys, a local New Orleans family separated from their beloved dog NOLA during the first three grueling days of hurricane Katrina. After Nola is tragically separated from her family in the floods aftermath, Jackson, a charismatic homeless mutt with a hopeless crush on Nola, and his loyal gang of street-smart strays, set out to reunite Nola with her family, as they help save and restore the city-in which they all love.
