Storyline: Cheyenne, a wealthy ex-rock star, lives in Dublin, disillusioned after retiring due to the suicide of two young fans. When his estranged father falls gravely ill, Cheyenne travels to New York to see him—arriving too late. He explains their 30-year silence stemmed from his father's rejection when Cheyenne adopted goth makeup at age 15. Reading his father's diary, Cheyenne discovers his father was tormented in Auschwitz by SS officer Alois Lange. He consults Nazi hunter Mordecai Midler, who dismisses Lange as insignificant. Determined, Cheyenne begins a road trip across the U.S. to find Lange. Along the way, he meets Lange’s wife, granddaughter, and a businessman. He buys a large firearm. At the gun store, a customer delivers a monologue about a pistol designed for “killing with impunity,” warning that if given the power to act like monsters, people will inevitably become them. Eventually, with Midler’s help, Cheyenne locates Lange, now blind. Lange admits he received letters from Cheyenne’s father for years. He downplays the event that traumatized Cheyenne’s father—urinating himself in fear—as minor, but says he admired the man’s relentless pursuit of revenge. Cheyenne photographs Lange and tells him it was unjust that his father died first. He forces the frail, blind man to walk naked into the salt flats, evoking the image of a Holocaust victim. Then, he and Midler drive off, leaving Lange behind. Cheyenne later returns home by plane, conquering a past fear. He cuts his long hair and abandons his goth clothes, jewelry, and makeup.
